Auckland
The proposal was to reinstate the essential bungalow features so as to recapture the intrinsic warmth and deep colours often used in the 1920s.
The project was to refurbish a modest 1926 bungalow, which had been subjected to a terrible renovation in the 1970s. The proposal was to reinstate the essential bungalow features so as to recapture the intrinsic warmth and deep colours often used in the 1920s.
The 1970s work extended to completely replacing the original architraves and skirting boards, the original doors had been replaced with flush ply doors, the panelled and beamed lounge ceiling (which had been painted) was overlaid with a lower ceiling and the original mantelpiece was replaced with a ‘modern’ concrete brick arrangement. With the lowered ceiling removed the now stained beams were stripped of paint and varnished and new cast fibrous plaster panels were installed.
Salvaged doors from a demo yard replaced the flush doors, a mantelpiece from the neighbour’s inorganic collection was installed and a new picture rail completed the ‘soft refit’. The hard work included the new stair to a new upstairs bedroom and ensuite. The paint finish to the architraves and skirting boards is a five coat combed finish system coloured to match the colour of the Cedar framed and Oregon panelled doors.
The colours selected needed to be soft to evoke the heritage values of the home, consistent with those used in the 1920s and, since a combed decorative finish was to be applied, suitable to replicate a timber grained effect to blend with the clear finished Cedar and Oregon doors. The five coat combed effect on all the architraves, skirting boards and picture rails is composed of Resene Aubergine as a base colour and Resene Hairy Heath combed to provide a grained effect. The gloss levels were reduced by the application of a Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin polyurethane final coat.
Wall colours Resene Heathered Grey and Resene Sugar Loaf in acrylic low sheen provide a warm background for the stronger trim colours. Resene Colorwood English Walnut stain was applied to the lounge ceiling beams and finished with Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin.
The five coat combed effect on all the architraves, skirting boards and picture rails is composed of Resene Lusta-Glo semi-gloss enamel for both the base and topcoats and combed to provide a grained effect.
Resene Qristal Clear Poly-Satin (two coats) was applied to the floor after this had been hand scraped. Hand scraping followed by hand sanding ensured that all the character marks and stains were retained; the retention of the ‘patina of age’ was important and would have been removed with machine sanding.
The ragroll effect on the bay window panelling utilised the same colour palette as elsewhere.
The architectural design work, carpentry work (including installation of the staircases), plasterboard fixing, colour selection and painting were carried out by the owner – Kiwi do-ityourself in the extreme.
