New Resene Blackest Black crowned the company's darkest colour offering yet. Resene Group Technical Manager Mike Clowes says a paint colour can only be classified as black if it reflects less than 1% of incident light. Recently, he and his team formulated an even blacker black than Resene Black, the colour that specifiers would previously turn to when only the darkest would do. As it turns out, shaving down that last percentage is a very tricky thing... find out more

With a chill in the air, many may think that painting isn’t possible… but they would be wrong! With the Resene wintergrade range you can paint your way through most winter days. The Resene Technical team first developed a small range of winterised products that will dry in temperatures down to 3°C, which have been used in winter conditions for over 10 years. To enable an even wider range of products and colours to be winterised, Resene Wintergrade Additive was launched. Simply follow the instructions on pack and add to waterborne paints to help them cure in colder temperatures.
The Resene wintergrade range also includes premixed Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider waterborne low sheen. And if you’re planning a large project, Resene also offers a made to order service, so if you need 200L or more of your chosen wintergrade finish, Resene can add the wintergrade additive and do the mixing for you.
Resene Hunger for Colour came back to help the Salvation Army restock its foodbanks. It was a simple swap – bring in two cans of food and swap them for a Resene testpot of your favourite colour. Despite the challenges of the latest Covid wave, over 15,000 cans of food were swapped for testpots during February, with over 290,000 cans of food swapped since Hunger for Colour began. The cans have once again given a timely boost to Salvation Army foodbanks, restocking shelves after a busy holiday and back-to-school period and helping prepare for winter when many families struggle. We appreciate the support of this programme that brings colourful joy and inspiration to so many while also helping out those that need it the most.

A freshly painted wall looks beautiful but what if you're after something just a little different. Or you'd like to upcycle some furniture and a straight paint finish might look a little plain.
Paint effects allow you the freedom to capture a mood, create an ambience and transform the mundane into something special. Some techniques also have the practical benefit of disguising less-than-perfect surfaces. In fact, imperfections in the surface can add to the overall impact of the effect.
This booklet contains a taste of the paint effects techniques commonly used, from French wash to crackle, woodgrain to marbling. There are a wide variety of other paint effects techniques that you can use to achieve highly professional results.
When creating a paint effect, the key thing to remember is that there are no hard and fast rules about what you should do. Spend time getting the effect right by trialling different colours and application techniques until you are happy with the finished look. Then use your trial area as a reference board for the whole project. Wall sockets, skirting boards and door frames should be masked off so that the effect may be continued right to the edge. Mix and match techniques, colours, textures and surfaces. The only limit is your imagination.

2021 marks Resene's 75th birthday. Resene was started in 1946 by an Eastbourne builder, Ted Nightingale, who needed an alkali resistant paint to cover his concrete buildings. There was nothing available at the time, so he developed his own - in a cement mixer in his garage! In response to demand from other builders, Ted commenced producing his paint on a commercial basis... more
Wallpaper has returned to our homes in a blaze of ultra-stylish designs, eye-catching textures, dimensional treatments, new materials and digital printing techniques.
Wallpaper delivers the opportunity to create interiors that hum with vibrancy and personality. It's a look that marries with the move towards more layered interiors with clusters of collectables. Wallpaper has become a conversation piece.
For those who remember wallpapers from their childhood, those sometimes dull and overpowering styles have been replaced with wallpapers that are rich, colourful and interesting.
We started small, using wallpapers to create a feature wall. Now, we're using wallpapers in whole rooms and houses, but also in unexpected ways – as art, on pegboards, shelving and more.
In this habitat plus, we share advice on how to choose wallpaper, the types available and how to hang it. We also look at the key current trends: botanic prints, florals, metallic finishes, graphic prints, oversized designs and murals, the classics, fun looks and personalised art prints.

With Resene Room Velvet moved to a new hybrid waterborne alkyd technology complete with the benefits of toughness and durability, lower VOCs and easy clean up in water, the Technical team have turned their attention to a hybrid version of Resene Lusta-Glo.
Resene Lusta-Glo semi-gloss solventborne enamel has been a popular product for anything from trims and joinery to bathrooms and wet areas for many years. As a solventborne finish it is slower to dry, ideal for those who need a little longer to apply the paint.
Bringing together the benefits of waterborne with the benefits of Resene Lusta-Glo, new Resene Waterborne Lusta-Glo is tough and durable, with lower VOCs and easy clean up in water. Initially the new product will be available in white and colours off white, with more tones to be released in the future.
Remember, all new products have their own nuances and tips and tricks to using them and this is especially the case when moving from one technology to another. When switching to a new product, allow a little extra time to read all the information and get used to the new product, and in next to no time its specification and use will become second nature.
Just when you thought you had the hang of which paint was which, we have a new category for you. Once there were solventborne paints, then there were waterborne paints, and now we have waterborne alkyd hybrid technology that combines the best of both!
The new evolution to waterborne alkyd technology, provides additional performance benefits combined with the environment in mind. They look like a traditional solventborne paint, but with the easy water wash-up and lower VOCs of a waterborne paint. Compared to a waterborne enamel, a waterborne alkyd has a tougher finish, but it is slower to dry. The slower dry time can be a benefit in disguise on some jobs, giving you more time to work the finish without excessive brush or roller marks. Always make sure you allow enough time for the first coat to dry properly before overcoating.
Waterborne alkyds may still yellow, when used on areas that don’t get natural light, but not to the same extent as a traditional solventborne product.
Resene Room Velvet is moving to a waterborne alkyd version, replacing the old solventborne version which is being deleted. The new version is available in white and colours off white... view data sheet

When we asked the Resene Technical team to create a coating that is designed to rust, it's probably not surprising that they double and triple checked whether we wanted to stop rusting or actually create the rusting effect.
Over the years, we have seen the Resene FX special effects range grow in range and application as decorators are looking for something new and different to try out to make their homes and projects as individual as they are.
Traditionally effects finishes were quite structured and formal – think rag rolling and marbling. Of late, effects finishes have tended to become more organic and freehand style, more of an anything goes approach.
From metallic to pearl shimmer, magnetic to crackle, blackboard to chalkboard, fluoro to glow-in-the-dark and now to rust, the only limit is your imagination.
Resene FX Faux Rust Effect is a waterborne coating used to create a rust style effect on exterior and interior surfaces. Once applied, it looks like rust, a look that will continue to develop as the coating ages. Leave it as is or protect it with a clear finish of diluted Resene Waterborne Aquapel. It's best used in non-contact areas.
Always work on a sample area first, applying two coats of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect basecoat then two coats of the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect Activator to set off the rusting effect. The colour intensity and variation of the rust effect depends on the application method. The sooner the activator is applied after the basecoat is tacky, the deeper the rust effect.

Once upon a time, the palette for children’s bedrooms tended to be very gender specific, focused on pink for girls, blue for boys and decidedly gender neutral colours like red, yellow or green. Luckily today’s kids are able to draw from a much larger source of inspiration and colour choices for their bedrooms and play spaces.
A child’s room is also a great chance for you to really play with colour and try out some ideas that you may not be brave enough to use elsewhere in your home. To help you get inspired, Resene has created the new habitat plus – kids’ spaces with a whole host of children’s room decorating ideas.

For all those that want the latest trends in their home, there are an equal number that know they want colour in their home, but they don’t necessarily want to follow the trends either. While there are plenty of colours to choose from already, Resene has gathered together a collection of many favourite Resene colours into a new Resene Classics collection. This colour range focuses on colours that outlast the trends, colours that have been popular for many years and will likely be popular for many more to come. The chart also includes a small collection of whites and neutrals so you can choose an entire colour palette using just one colour chart… or you can add extra accent colours or variations of your chosen neutral using the Resene palettes or other Resene colour ranges. When designing timber interiors, it can be tempting to leave them uncoated, but this leaves the timber prone to wear and tear, dust and contaminants that can be impossible to remove later. Clear coating timber provides a smooth seal and makes it easier to wipe clean.
And now with new Resene Aquaclear Natural you can apply a flat waterborne clear finish that protects the timber while still allowing its natural beauty to show through. Resene Aquaclear Natural is designed for interior timber walls and ceilings to enhance and protect timber from everyday wear and tear. The flat finish helps the timber retain its natural just cut look. If a little colour rejuvenation is needed, Resene Colorwood Enhance may be added to Resene Aquaclear Natural to add extra depth and colour.
Resene Aquaclear is also available in satin, semi-gloss and gloss finishes for those looking for a higher sheen effect.
Little habits, repeated often, can make a massive difference over time. Not so long ago, recycling paint containers wasn’t something most customers even contemplated. Today, for many, it’s part of their normal painting process to recycle the packaging when they have finished the project. It was 15 years ago that Resene PaintWise first started following nearly five years of development. In those days product stewardship was in its infancy so there was no easy path to follow to set up a programme. Every process was forging new ground. Since then, over a kilotonne, i.e. over 1,000,000 kilograms, of packaging and paint has been recycled. That equates to millions of packs being returned.
In Australia, unwanted paint can be returned to the Paintback service. This service started in 2016, supported by Resene.

It's a common problem… you find a fabric you like but don't know what paint colour to team with it. Ever had clients opening testpots because they want to see which colour is inside? Or perhaps you've been painting with testpots yourself and found you need to open each one to find the colour you want.
The Resene testpot is changing to a new format lid… with a clear viewing panel so you and your customers can see what colour is inside, without having to open the testpot.
The overall size, fill level, labelling and pricing is the same, just with a new lid and a flatter finish, which provides a little extra grip when opening the lid.
The new testpot lids are coming through as the old lids run out.
Always remember: Wet paint does not look identical to dry paint so the colour through the viewing hole is just a guideline of the colour. Once dry the colour may look a little different so always use the Resene colour charts or the colour library folders to view the colour when dry.
Resene has been family owned since it started in 1946. Ted Nightingale started Resene in his garage, later passing the reigns onto his son Tony, who passed the reins on many years later to his son, Nick.
Tony's hard work and dedication has been acknowledged with his acceptance into the Business Hall of Fame. Tony Nightingale (1939-2003) was an innovator, taking Resene multinational, introducing new products, processes and colour systems. Tony was passionate about paint and colour, with a knack for developing technologies and ideas that had never been seen before in the paint market.
