New Zealand demands that you can prove your expertise and guarantee the quality of your work.
If you've worked in the industry for years but have no qualification, BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation) can help you get a professional qualification to recognise your existing skills and experience.
BCITO can assess your current skills and abilities against the standards required to gain the National Certificate in Painting & Decorating.
You provide evidence (such as written or photographic evidence and references) of your skills, and a BCITO training advisor visits you onsite for practical assessments. If BCITO assess that your industry experience is sound, you can sign into a BCITO training agreement and commence the process. If the assessment highlights areas that require further work, you will need to complete additional assessment activities – BCITO will provide you with resources to help you prepare for this.
Your BCITO training advisor will keep in contact with you throughout the process and conduct assessments along the way. Once you successfully demonstrate your competence in all areas you'll gain your qualification.
Having your experience recognised can take several months to a couple of years – it depends on how much industry experience you have. One big advantage of the process is that you can complete most assessments at your own pace.
