This property belongs to a couple who have been clients of Coote&Co.’s for many years. They are stylish and well-travelled and this is reflected in their beautiful, colourful interiors.
The brief from the client was that she wanted to create something for herself, it was her study, she was paying for it and no one could say no. She wanted a pink study. The room required a full overhaul including painting, lighting, furniture and storage. The client had a wonderful collection of existing artworks including small yet vibrant paintings from India, watercolour paintings of ballerinas and fabulous watercolour floorplans from their beach house. These combined with an 18th century French Louis XV bureau from Graham Geddes Antiques formed the basis of the design.
To make the space more contemporary it was decided to go bold with the wall colour while being considerate to what would complement the art. A mirror added to a wall helped to make the space appear bigger. Apart from the existing desk, nearly everything in this study was made bespoke by Coote&Co. including the desk chair, armchair and footstool, curtains, pendant light, lattice console and framing of art.
Layers of repeating colour is what unifies this space and makes it a glamorous and chic room for the client to enjoy.
As the rest of the house features bright and beautiful wall colours, the study required a similar palette. Resene Cupid was selected as the wall colour with consideration to the vibrancy used throughout the rest of the house as well as the colours in the artwork that was to be featured in the room.
When creating the bespoke lattice console by Coote&Co. it was decided to use the same Resene Cupid paint colour but in a high gloss finish. White or neutral colours would have been too stark and there were so many other colours in the textiles and art that there was no desire to add more. In this way, the console almost looks like it is a built in piece though it is actually free standing and has a beautiful gloss using Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne paint differentiating it from the walls.
These clients and house were originally worked on by Charlotte’s father, the late renowned international designer John Coote. Charlotte has since taken on the clients and continues to work on the property, updating new rooms each year.
Resene SpaceCote Flat was used on the walls. The flat finish was selected to balance out the bright colour in a smaller space. This finish is continue on the ceiling with the lightly warmed Resene Half Bianca.
