Furnitures and features

From habitat plus - wood stains

With our typical Antipodean climate of experiencing four seasons in one day, outdoor furniture can take a beating.

Stained outdoor furniture

Protect outdoor furniture from the elements with the Resene Woodsman range. The pine frame and chair of this swing seat are stained in Resene Woodsman Natural.

Luckily, it’s easily rejuvenated with Resene Timber and Furniture Gel. This non-drip gel formula is ideal for coating furniture such as chairs and tables as it won’t drip through cracks like a regular wood stain. It is available in a range of colours so your furniture finish can complement or contrast with your home’s weatherboard or decking wood stain colour. You can also use Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain or Resene Furniture and Decking Oil for furniture.

If you’re staining new kwila timber remember the kwila colour can leech out. Place the furniture somewhere that won’t be affected by staining and wait until the leeching out is complete before placing it on your deck.

Pergolas

Whether they’re a structure for growing grapevines or a shady spot on the deck, pergolas add colour and interest to your home. Try a striking black such as Resene Pitch Black (choose the Resene CoolColour formula to protect plants), a contrasting red such as Resene Whero or let the natural beauty of the timber shine through with Resene Natural, Resene Uluru or Resene Driftwood.

did you know?  Resene TimberLock can be used on weathered and greying timber furniture to preserve and condition timber. Resene TimberLock is designed to increase the water, fungal and UV resistance of the wood and can even rejuvenate timber fibres.

White pergola and outdoor furniture

Resene Woodsman Whitewash has been used to brighten up the weathered outdoor furniture in this sunny garden. The soft white complements the Resene Double Black White used on the pergola and concrete walls.

Resene Woodsman Cedar imparts the warm brown of new cedar on pine. This is a great wood colour to contrast against green or white foliage.

Rejuvenate weathered garden furniture in 5 easy steps

  1. Use a garden sprayer to saturate the timber surface of the furniture using Resene Timber and Deck Wash diluted with fresh water following the instructions on the label. Avoid direct sunlight and ensure the surface remains damp for approximately 15 minutes.

  2. Scrub using a short-bristled scrubbing brush and fresh water to remove mould and dirt. Rinse thoroughly.

  3. Allow to dry before sanding any 'furred' timber or marks.

  4. Protect any decking or paving with a dropcloth before applying Resene Timber and Furniture Gel with a brush, taking care not to 'double lap' the stain.

  5. Allow the stain to penetrate the timber for 4-5 minutes before wiping down the excess stain in a circular motion using a clean lint-free cotton cloth. If necessary apply a thin second coat but allow the stain to penetrate the timber for only 2-3 minutes before wiping down.

top tip  When staining new outdoor furniture, if possible allow the furniture to weather for 4-5 weeks and clean with Resene Timber and Deck Wash before staining to help open up the timber to accept the stain.

safety tip  Sanding dusts can be very irritating and affect health. Always wear the appropriate safety equipment for each project. Dry sanding will usually result in more free floating dust particles than wet sanding.
