Q&A   p. 09

Q. What paint do you recommend for high wear areas such as door thresholds?

A. Resene enamels (e.g. Resene Super Gloss) or two pack polyurethanes (e.g. Resene Uracryl 400 Series) applied over an appropriate priming system.

May 2015

Q. If you can recoat a painted surface after two hours, are you still meant to sand in between coats?

A. Rapid recoat is usually associated with a waterborne paint. Sanding of freshly applied waterborne paints is difficult and usually not required. Sanding between coats may only be required if there are bits on the first coat due to dust etc but is not required for adhesion.

May 2015

Q. What stains do you have for interior flooring?

A. Use Resene Colorwood interior wood stain or for a whitewash finish Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

May 2015

Q. I have a steel built yacht painted over several years with a chlorinated rubber coating. I wish to change to a marine gloss enamel. What preparation is required?

A. Scrub down the chlor rubber with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to label to achieve a chalk free surface then apply a coat of Resene Galvo One. Allow the Resene Galvo One to cure for 16 hours then apply the marine enamel. This system is only suitable above the water line.

May 2015

Q. What paint and method can be used to paint directly on to glass in the same way as a coloured splashback?

A. We sell Resene Imperite IF 503 for glass splashback painting. See the data sheet and labels (Base and Hardener) for application instructions.

May 2015

Q. What is the best primer to use when painting over old varnish?

A. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, apply a thin coat and leave to cure for 48 hours before overcoating.

May 2015

Q. Which product should I use as a primer on new bare smooth cedar to help stop tannins bleeding through? Finish is solid colour, not stained. Exterior.

A. We recommend Resene Wood Primer.

May 2015

Q. Which paint in the CoolColour range is best suited for weatherboards and other timber claddings for dark colours to avoid heat warping of cladding boards?

A. The paint type is not the determinant - it is the colour. We recommend using either Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) for painting exterior weatherboards. Please note that Resene CoolColours™ are not cool to touch but the CoolColour version of a colour reflects more heat than the same colour made using non cool technology. This reduces but does not eliminate the risk for board dimensional changes to occur.

May 2015

Q. I want to paint my ceramic tiles on the kitchen and bathroom floors. As they are a terracotta look there is a slight texture but pretty smooth and semi glossy, not real shiny. What can I do with them?

A. The only system we have for fired tiles is to apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours without water or steam contact, then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. Adhesion will take about five days to develop before which the paint system may be easily damaged.

May 2015

Q. I have a house with aluminium powdercoated window frames. What can I paint these with, preferably brushed or rolled, not sprayed?

A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then apply a coat of Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer and two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

May 2015

Q. What is the best primer for fibrous plaster ceilings?

A. Resene Sureseal is the sealer to use for sealing fibrous plaster.

May 2015

Q. What should we use to cover a new concrete floor that is in a basement and will be walked on? The concrete is about two months old and has a damp proof layer laid under it. We just want to be able to keep it clean by mopping/brushing once done and in use.

A. Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring.

May 2015

Q. I have an old bungalow that I am painting on the exterior. I have stripped the paint back to bare timber and sanded. Then given it one coat of general purpose solvent based Resene Wood Primer. There is a good quality finish. Is it necessary to sand before I apply the Resene Sonyx 101 topcoats and do they also require sanding between coats?

A. Sanding after priming can be done but is only really required to lightly denib any surface defects. It is not common to sand acrylic topcoats. Sanding of freshly applied acrylic paints such as Resene Sonyx 101 is not easy as the heat generated by sanding can cause the acrylic paint to ball up rather than sand.

May 2015

Q. I'm looking at doing a DIY for a garage floor - a complete makeover. Is there a certain product I could use? What I was looking at was painting stripes, or some sort of pattern on the garage floor so that it is not boring. I don't see why a garage floor has to be so boring!

A. Assuming there is no curing membrane (water splashed onto the surface should be immediately absorbed and darken the concrete if there is no curing membrane on the floor), then apply an adhesion coat of Resene ConcreteSeal 3in1 and then two coats of Resene Uracryl 402. Allow the Resene Uracryl to cure for five days before driving onto the painted surface.

May 2015

Q. My kitchen, dining, lounge area is open plan and a rather large space located in Cromwell (hot summer, cold winter). The house is about 18 years old. The ceiling is marked with what appears to be grey dust that forms on the plasterboard along where the beams are above in the ceiling cavity. It doesn't wash off and I suspect it may be static (like dust on TV screen).

What prep and product do I paint with to prevent this happening after I redecorate?

A. Unusual effect, cannot see why dust would be only present on the beam lines. If it was dust/dirt it should wash off. The other possibility is mould growth. There can be a thermal difference between the plasterboard directly attached to the beams and the hang free plasterboard. This can result in the accumulation of moisture along the beam line which may give conditions for mould growth. Is there insulation in the ceiling? To check if it is mould try wiping an area with a cloth and bleach - be careful not to drop any bleach onto floor coverings etc. If it is mould the bleach should bleach out the given colour.

May 2015

Q. I am wanting to paint a design on a new powdercoated letterbox. Is it possible to paint on a powdercoated product and what preparation would I need to do before painting it?

A. Wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then you can overcoat with any Resene exterior waterborne paint.

May 2015

Q. I have an old Fraemohs house (looks like a Lockwood inside). The interior walls are solid timber with what I assume is a polyurethane finish as the wood is very yellow. I would like to paint the walls to lighten the house up. To use paint on this surface what undercoat/primer do we need to use on the polyurethane finish?

A. Clean down the areas to be painted using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure with ventilation for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Paint adhesion will develop over five days and during this time the new paintwork may be susceptible to mechanical damage.

May 2015

Q. Do I need to sand Seratone® before I use smooth surface sealer?

A. In most cases no as long as the Seratone® is clean and free from all contaminants. The following paint system can be used in all areas with the exception of the shower lining. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water or steam contact for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. The paint system will take at least five days to develop good adhesion. During this time the new paint may be susceptible to mechanical damage.

May 2015

Q. Can you please recommend any primer/preparation products to paint a good condition 9 year old concrete garage floor that has a few oil spots on it. I cannot use any sort of cleaner that needs to be washed off onto the driveway outside the garage as it could be damaged. I am using Resene Uracryl paint.

A. You could prime using Resene Armourcote 221. Best prep for the painting of a concrete floor is to degrease then diamond grind.

May 2015

Q. We have a light stained bathroom vanity. It needs restaining as its now badly marked. What do I need to use so that its completely waterproof as, with kids, it gets quite wet? We are going to a darker shade as the pale pine just doesn't look right anymore.

A. Sand back to bare timber and restain using Resene Colorwood stain. Allow the stain to cure for 48 hours then apply four coats of Resene Polythane (try to seal off all exposed timber).

May 2015

Q. Do we need a special paint for our bathroom ceiling or is the standard Resene interior ceiling paint ok?

A. We don't recommend a standard acrylic ceiling paint in wet areas. Use Resene SpaceCote Flat (waterborne enamel) if you want a flat finish.

May 2015

Q. I am looking for advice as the best way to fix cracks in a concrete floor to a first level 20 car garage. Water also blows in through some open sides.

A. Epoxy injection would be the best solution for crack filling.

May 2015

Q. We are building and don't know whether to paint the kitchen cupboard doors a high gloss or low sheen? The colour will be white. What would you recommend?

A. The higher the gloss, the easier cleaning will be, but it does come down to a personal choice. High gloss white can be stark especially under certain lighting conditions.

May 2015

Q. What is the reason or causes for gloss or sheen changes in areas subjected to cleaning or rubbing?

A. This is due to poor burnish resistance and is usually seen with paints that are formulated at very low gloss levels or paints formulated using soft resins.

May 2015

Q. We have just painted our toilet walls very dark blue with white architraves, scotias etc but the blue paint has dripped here and there onto the white paint. What would be the easiest way to cover the blue? We painted the bare wood with white enamel based paint over an undercoat.

A. Painting over the spots is the only way to rectify the situation, you should lightly sand the spots to remove some of the blue and to produce a smoother surface.

May 2015

Q. Does Resene have any paint that I could use to paint on stones that will be left in the garden? They will be decorative with pictures of animals, plants, people etc.

A. Resene testpot paints have been used for this purpose.

May 2015

Q. Can you help on how to get a dark stain and varnish out of oak furniture?

A. It depends on the stain but if the original stain was spirit based then it's extremely difficult. Stains are not removed using paint strippers alone and the only way is to remove the timber to the depth of the original stain penetration by sanding/planing.

May 2015

Q. I would like to paint my porch floor and concrete path running to the porch. The concrete path is in good condition. The wood porch floor has been painted in a waterbased Resene paint. Can I paint straight over both using Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint in a Grey Friars colour or do i have to prime the concrete or porch with something first?

A. Prime the bare concrete with Resene Sureseal and the existing acrylic paint with Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat. The topcoat with Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2015

Q. We will be painting an old wooden Auckland villa at the end of May and wanted to use a Resene Lumbersider CoolColour™ paint (Resene Neutral Bay) but our painters have recommended that we go with a Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider instead. Are they justified in recommending this?

A. This colour (Resene Neutral Bay) cannot be tinted in Resene Wintergrade Lumbersider. They may have suggested using the wintergrade paint as it does extend the application window into less ideal conditions.

May 2015

Q. I have painted waterbased exterior Resene paint on my 80s plaster over brick house. There is an old crack in the plaster which the previous owner has filled with silicone. The new paint has bubbled over this section. Should the silicone be removed in favour of a different filler or would an undercoat of something like Resene Sureseal stop this from reoccurring?

A. Sounds as if the silicone used is an unpaintable type; you will need to remove and refill using a paintable sealant.

May 2015

Q. How do I remove tarnishing from copper?

A. You can use white vinegar and salt to remove tarnishing from copper; however it will return especially in fully exposed exterior areas. To reduce re tarnishing you need to apply thick layer of an NFM (nonferrous metal) lacquer clear.

May 2015

Q. Is it possible to paint Resene Touch Wood on wood painted a brown colour?

A. Resene Touch Wood is a Resene Woodsman stain colour; we do not recommend application of our stain colours over a solid paint colour.

May 2015

Q. We have recently purchased an old villa, which has plasterboard, skimmed plastered and painted with acrylic paint directly on the skim plaster with no undercoat in between. The paint is chipping and peeling. Can you suggest what we need to do? In one room I have peeled off as much paint as I could and given it a rough sand then painted the walls with an oil based pigmented sealer and will plaster over the peeled areas again. Can you advise if I am on the right track or should I be doing something else?

A. You are on the right track; no other way that would achieve easier removal of the flaking paint.

May 2015

Q. What paint is recommended for repainting over butynol? I have a roof section that has a thick white paint that is breaking away where lichen grew.

A. If there is fall on the roof any Resene exterior acrylic (two coats) can be used after a clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. If there is little fall then prime the bare butynol with Resene Membrane Roofing Primer before topcoating.

Suggest that you treat the roof twice a year with Resene Deep Clean to reduce lichen growth.

May 2015

Q. I have a garage built in 1976 which although watertight is quite damp. It is of concrete block contruction with concrete floor. Are there any products I can use on the block walls and/or floor to help with the damp problem - a product that works like some sort of sealant or vapour barrier?

A. We recommend three coats of Resene X-200 for the exterior wall. Given the age of the wall it is best to apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal prior to application of the Resene X-200.

For the floor you could paint with Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring. Splash water onto the floor. If it is absorbed immediately and the concrete darkens then there is no need to diamond grind before painting.

May 2015

Q. We are renovating some sections of a double storey late 19th century residential house in Sydney's inner west. House is not heritage listed. It has major problems with rising damp in the ground floor, a back section that contains the kitchen. In some areas mould has grown on the walls of the kitchen/living room area. New plasterboard will be used in the kitchen and living room areas for the walling and ceiling. Could you please tell me what sort of undercoat or primer is needed? What is the difference between a undercoat and primer? Is a sealer required? How does plasterboard need to be treated/painted to ensure that mould does not grow again?

A. Our standard system for painting new stopped plasterboard in a kitchen is to apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of a Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel, such as Resene SpaceCote Flat Kitchen & Bathroom or Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom (semi-gloss)

Primers are applied to provide specific properties to the paint system; the prime function is adhesion to the prepared substrate and in the case of metal primers anti-corrosion properties. Undercoats are usually used to increase film build of the system and may be required to ensure topcoat adhesion. Some such as our Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat can function both as a primer and undercoat.

Mould growth is symptomatic of an environment issue and while paint can control mould growth (paint coatings with increased mouldicides) it is environment change that will give the best control - increase ventilation, remove moisture and increase light levels.

May 2015

Q. How do I verdigris a shiny brass light fitting?

A. It is usual to coat the brass with a clear lacquer to prevent oxidation of the brass surface, so any lacquer layer will need to be removed before trying to age the brass. Solvents are used for this but the removal is not always 100% successful. Suggest you try using Resene Polythane Brush Cleaner to remove the lacquer then apply a mixture of white vinegar and salt to the brass surface.

May 2015

Q. I've painted the outside of my sash windows with your product. As advised, the paint has overlapped the putty by quite a bit. How do you advise I go about scraping the excess paint off and making the overlap neat and uniform?

A. Use a sharp blade to cut a line then slide the blade under the section to be removed.

May 2015

Q. Could you please give me some tips on how to paint over a Lockwood interior?

A. Ensure the areas to be painted are cleaned down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave the sealer to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of a Resene SpaceCote interior wall paint. Paint adhesion will take a minimum of a week to develop so care is needed early to avoid mechanical damage to the newly painted surfaces. Be aware that if there is board movement the original varnished surface may re-appear.

May 2015

Q. I have an old house with timber ceilings with a shellac finish. Could you please advise what undercoat and topcoat I should be using? I wish to paint them white.

A. Make sure the ceilings are clean of any contaminants especially any smoke residues then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Flat.

May 2015

Q. Can I paint Resene Sonyx 101 straight onto a COLORSTEEL® shed? I have cleaned the shed down and the existing coating is in good condition.

A. As long as the COLORSTEEL® factory applied finish is sound and the COLORSTEEL® has received direct weathering for at least a month.

May 2015

Q. We are planning a new house with Cedar cladding. We are wanting to stain the cedar to look like the Woodsman Oiled Cedar. Can you use this on exterior cladding?

A. We recommend Resene Waterborne Woodsman.

May 2015

Q. Some students at my school have painted murals on marine ply using classroom acrylics and some Resene testpots. I am looking for a clear product to seal and protect the surface so they can be placed outside and have been told that I can't use an oil based product over acrylic paint. I have only found interior water based varnish products. Does Resene have a product which would be suitable?

A. You could apply a full coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS. This clear coating will protect the painted surface. We also have clear anti-graffiti systems – such as Resene Uracryl Graffitishield – but this product is not suitable for children to use.

May 2015

Q. What type of sleeve should I use for a flat-pack door using Resene Enamacryl. What is the best filler to use for a very fine fill? Also it seems to be more shiny in some spots then in others. Is there anything I can do to eradicate the heavy brush lines without applying it with a spray gun?

A. Waterborne enamels set up and dry quickly which gives a reduced time for flow and levelling. This can partially be overcome by addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive. For rolling on flat doors use a Resene No.4 roller sleeve with the addition of the Resene Hot Weather Additive.

May 2015

Q. Do you have an etching primer? I want to paint an aluminium teapot, so I need very little.

A. Yes we have a chromate free etch primer: Resene Vinyl Etch.

May 2015

Q. I have a shower/wet room that has porous tiles which is conducive to mould growth. Is there a product on the market which is a clear anti-mould lacquer which I can spray or paint to the surface of the tiles which won't change the aesthetics but will reduce mould build up?

A. Treat tiles with Resene Moss & Mould Killer following label directions. Allow the tiled surface to dry out then apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel and leave to cure with good ventilation for 48 hours before using.

May 2015

Q. What paint do you recommend for painting new GIB® Aqualine which has not been previously painted?

A. Apply a coat of Resene Sureseal (for the ceiling apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat over the Resene Sureseal) then two coats of any Resene Kitchen & Bathroom waterborne enamel paint.

May 2015

Q. We have painted internal walls at the moment and are looking to gradually paint each room of our 9 year old house. Can we just paint directly over the top of the existing paint or do we need to treat the walls with something first? Sometimes when we remove Blutack® from the walls it brings some paint with it - is that normal?

A. Suggest using Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat prior to applying a new Resene waterborne wall paint. Long term exposure to Blutack® can soften some acrylic paints to the extent that the paint can peel off around the contact area.

May 2015

Q. I have sized my walls in the bathroom and wallpapered and hate it! So have decided to paint. I will strip the wallpaper; the finish is good for painting. Will a sugar soap wash and light sand be sufficient prep or do I have to ensure all the size is removed? I intend to use a waterbased enamel.

A. After stripping best to remove as much of the size as possible using warm water with a few squirts of detergent. Then allow to dry and apply a coat of Resene Sureseal followed by Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then finish with the two coats of waterborne enamel.

May 2015

Q. I have just painted a room with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel. About 15 hours later I did a small touch up and now it shows where I have touched up. Do I have to repaint the whole wall again?

A. If you used the same can of paint for touch up it normally wouldn't be obvious unless you touched up by brush and originally applied the paint by roller. Leave it to cure for a few more days then assess the difference.

May 2015

Q. Does Resene have paint with corrosion protection properties?

A. The accepted definition of corrosion usually only applies to metals and in particular steel and galvanised metal. We have specific metal primers to give corrosion protection. Resene Summit Roof is a topcoat that has additional anti-corrosion features built into the paint formulation.

May 2015

Q. I currently have a large concrete area which has been sealed. I want to paint over this area with a paving paint or concrete paint rather than a sealer as removing the sealer would be very hard and expensive. Is there a paint that can be applied directly over a standard concrete sealer? The area gets minimum foot traffic.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2015

Q. I would like to know how long the high VOC paints (like oil based enamels) emit gasses when used inside. I have read that moisture cure polyurethane can emit gasses for months. Is that also true with the paints? My painter has said that you don't get such a good finish using waterbased over old oil enamels.

A. The loss of VOC is determined by temperatures and ventilation, and there is no way to predict given the variables. Resene solventborne enamels are now made using a solvent with a very low aromatic content, and thus are better for users and those exposed to the fresh paint from a VOC safety than traditional aromatic containing solvents such as those used in moisture cured polyurethane clears. Changes in room air volumes and exhausting to the outside is the key factor in removal of VOC from a painted room. Not all VOCs present a potential harm particularly in a one off exposure. Just because the human nose detects a new odour this does not immediately constitute harm. In general with good ventilation the majority of VOCs have left the paint film within 48 hours.

May 2015

Q. I had an 130 square metre outdoor patio area tiled with what was supposed to be 'outdoor' tiles. They were very slippery when wet so we had a non slip surface wash applied which was a disaster. The surface now has what I can only describe as wash marks etched into it. The tiles are a cream colour. Is there a surface paint that I can apply or would I be creating another monster? The tiles have light domestic traffic.

A. Application of a clear layer may fix the patchiness but may well recreate a slippery finish. We cannot provide a slip resistant clear finish that does not show the slip additive. If a painted finish is acceptable, suggest a test patch using Resene ConcreteSeal 3in1 to confirm adhesion be done, leave for 24 hours and then check adhesion. If this is successful then you can apply two coats of either Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is a more textured (non slip) finish.

May 2015

Q. I need to paint shipping containers, some quite rusty. What is your most suitable product and application method? I am looking to paint with some deep-tone colours.

A. Scrub down using Resene Roof and Metal Wash following the label instructions. Prepare areas of corrosion back to a sound surface free of lose corrosion products using a 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc. Ensure areas of flaking paint are feathered back to a sound edge. Spot prime bare metal using Resene ArmourZinc 110 and then apply a full coat of Resene Galvo One and finish with two coats of Resene Summit Roof.

May 2015

Q. We are owner builders and had new plaster put up about five years ago. We have just hired painters to paint the house. They quoted for an undercoat and two coats of paint. They have currently finished the ceiling and the other day they called us and said that because the plaster is so old that it has turned yellow in some areas, so they need to put another coat of paint and also they had to add some 'stain remover' to the paint, in order for the yellow not to show through. Is this correct?

A. If new plasterboard is not painted it can develop a yellow colour over time and this will bleed through a waterborne paint system. In this situation our recommendation is to apply Resene Sureseal as the sealer prior to application of the acrylic topcoats. Given that the paint system has been applied you can seal off the migration of the yellow stain using Resene Sureseal or Resene StainLock before re applying the acrylic topcoats. A stain remover does not need to be added to the paint.

May 2015

Q. Three months ago a man painted one wall of a sunny bedroom for me. The wall was previously coated with a metallic silver finish and had quite a few staple marks etc. He plastered, sealed and topcoated with two coats. It looks good but there is an awful paint stink. I've tried onions, baking soda and charcoal but still the smell builds up on hot days. I think he didn't let the sealer coat dry off enough. I don't know what the sealer coat was. I am in the process of trying to sand the wall back. Is there anything I can reseal it with to stop the smell or would vinyl wallpaper do it?

A. The odour may be due to paint degradation of the wet paint prior to or at application. Suggest that the walls are wiped down with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and applied following label instructions as a first step and ensure that the room is well ventilated. If this does not remove the odour then it is unlikely to be associated with the paint but with another cause.

May 2015

Q. We have three exposed rafters to the carport that we are looking at replacing with new timber which we plan to treat with H4 treatment. What Resene paint/products do you recommend using to protect it from the exposed elements of both rain and sunlight? In winter time there is a lot of moisture about, sitting on top of the exposed area since it is flat.

A. Prime the timber with Resene Wood Primer and then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat paint. Ensure that all end grains are sealed to prevent water ingress.

May 2015

Q. We have recently taken a decorative brick cladding off our house (probably put on in the 1960s) to expose the original weatherboards. We plan to restore the weatherboards, but not until next summer. The weatherboards are in reasonable condition; however they have many nail holes in them from where the cladding battens were attached. We have takena sample of the paint into our local Resene ColorShop and they have confirmed that the paint on the weatherborads is lead based. We plan to use Resene supplied waterbased paint stripper to remove all of the lead based paint.

Our question is: Do you think we need to fill or cover the nail holes and the patches of the bare timber so the weatherboads don't absorb moisture over the winter? Or will they be ok if left and we wait for a couple of weeks of sunshine in the summer before we paint?

We are hesitant to fill the holes with filler at this stage as we would need to sand (which we can't do with the lead based paint) or remove the paint around each nail hole to fill the holes properly, and then prime this area - which will then be left for 6-8 months before we do the next stage of painting.

If you recommend that we cover the holes would brushing a bit of primer over the holes protect the boards form the elements until we are ready to paint the whole house? When we are ready to paint we would then apply the paint stripper and remove the primer along with all of the existing paint.

A. Nail holes do need to ultimately be filled but not before paint stripping. At worst there may be rust staining arising from rusting of the nails. Bare timber also will require priming and this can be done by spot priming now with the knowledge that the primer will be stripped at a later date along with the existing paint.

May 2015

Q. Can your Resene Woodsman Whitewash be used on a new deck? It will be covered with a roof but subject to some weather.

A. When used on a deck there is the possibility of an annual maintenance coat being required to maintain the effect. The stain is designed to erode on weathering and the erosion rate is deterred by exposure conditions. There is no flaking or peeling of the stain and a wash down is all that is required prior to recoating.

May 2015

Q. I want to paint an old Seratone® paneled bathroom and would like to know whether to apply the etch undercoat and topcoats with a roller or brush or any other solution.

A. You can use the following system for changing the colour of the Seratone® with the exception of a shower lining. Ensure all surfaces are clean and free from oils/grease and soap residues. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure for 48 hours ensuring good ventilation and warmth. Do not allow the sealer to become wet. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. Again avoid water or steam contact with the newly painted surfaces for at least 48 hours and maintain good ventilation and warm temperatures over this time. Paint adhesion will take at least five days to develop and this is again temperature dependent.

May 2015

Q. I have mahogany veneer doors. Can I paint them white but keep a grainy look to the paint?

A. If you apply a standard paint system to a veneer that has surface fissures most of the fissures will not be completely filled.

May 2015

Q. Will Resene TimberLock work its magic on old weathered Rimu weatherboards?

A. Resene TimberLock applied according to the data sheet can be used on any exterior timber. It will inhibit mould and fungal decay but cannot address existing rot.

May 2015

Q. I am having to replace the metal soakers on my weatherboard house after just 7 years as they have rusted badly. I used a galv metal primer, undercoat, and two acrylic topcoats but it failed. Anyway I am wondering what is the absolute best practice for painting new soakers. I am choosing between stainless steel and aluminium (I believe the aluminium comes etch-primed). Also do you have any info/opinion as to whether one is better than the other?

A. Galvanising can corrode on the exposed and rear face and this is common with soakers and flashings despite the exposed face being painted with an appropriate primer/topcoat paint system. For best results envelop priming is recommended but often not possible if the soakers are already in place. The rate of corrosion is determined by ethe corrosivity of the environment.

For galvanising there are varying zinc thicknesses that can be achieved, the lower the thickness the lower the protection.

Re your question aluminum vs stainless steel. Both form an oxide layer on the metal surface which protects from corrosion; painting should only be for decorative purposes. There are grades of stainless that are used in marine environments but I do not believe this grade is used to make stainless steel soakers.

We have used Resene Galvo One and Resene Galvo-Prime for painting both aluminum and stainless steel flashings. While traditionally these metals have been etch primed we find better adhesion is achieved using the Resene galvanised iron primers. Ensure the surfaces are washed down with Resene Roof and Metal Wash following label instructions before priming.
