Whitewash memo board

It’s easy to recycle some old tongue-and-groove timber into a whitewash memo board with a little bit of help from Resene.

How to make a whitewash memo board

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner – Project 86

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need

  • Clean cloth
  • Cup hooks
  • Old tongue and groove timber
  • Paintbrush
  • Piece of plywood measuring approximately 250mm x 580mm
  • PVA glue

To get the look:  Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Chamois.

Other ideas:  For a soft pink effect use Resene Colorwood Whitewash tinted to Resene Becalm.

How to make a whitewash memo board

 

Whitewash memo board - Step 1 Step one
Cut the piece of plywood to the dimensions listed above.


Whitewash memo board - Step 2 Step two
Cut seven different length pieces of tongue and groove timber ranging from 350mm to 450mm.


Whitewash memo board - Step 3 Step three
Apply a generous amount of PVA glue to the piece of plywood.


Whitewash memo board - Step 4 Step four
Place the pieces of tongue-and-groove timber on top of the plywood, as shown, and allow the glue to dry.


Whitewash memo board - Step 5 Step five
Lightly sand the tongue-and-groove timber to remove any rough edges and to ‘key’ the surface.


Whitewash memo board - Step 6 Step six
Wipe off any sanding residue with a damp cloth and allow to dry.


Whitewash memo board - Step 7 Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Colorwood Whitewash to the memo board, brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry.


Whitewash memo board - Step 8 Step eight
Fix a hanging device to the top of the memo board using two cup hooks and a short piece of sisal rope.
