Habitat bright ideas with Fleur Thorpe – DIY projects
Use your favourite testpot colours to make Matariki peg stars to celebrate Māori new year. Fleur Thorpe shows you how.
Wall colour Resene Dark Knight
Step 1: For this project you need 96 wooden half clothes pegs to make 6 stars. (Photo 1). If you wish to make more or less stars adjust the number of pegs to suit.
Step 2: Start by gluing the flat edges of the pegs together into pairs. You need 8 pairs for one star. (Photo 2).
Step 3: Next, glue 4 pairs of pegs into a cross. (Photo 3).

Step 4: Paint a cross each with Resene Torea Bay, Resene Chetwode Blue, Resene Kamikaze, Resene Japonica, Resene Pirate Gold and Resene Galliano. (Photo 4).
Step 5: Use PVA glue to glue one cross on top of the other to form a star, or you can use hot glue to speed up the drying time. Apply the darker of the two colours on top of the lighter colour, e.g. Resene Torea Bay on top of Resene Chetwode Blue; Resene Kamikaze on top of Resene Japonica; Resene Pirate Gold on top of Resene Galliano. (Photo 5).

Step 6: Use a pin or Blu Tack to fix the stars to the wall. (Photos 6 and Finished project).
Top tip: Finish parts of your stars in Resene FX Nightlight for a soft glow-in-the-dark effect. Or add touches of Resene FX Metallic for extra bling.
