Habitat bright ideas with Fleur Thorpe – DIY projects
Create lightweight and colourful wire flowers to add extra colour to your garden all year round.
Choose colours that suit your garden’s colour palette or opt for extra bright colours for a pick-me-up palette.
Step 1
Start by using some wire cutters to cut out some circles from the chicken wire. Fleur’s circles were 40cm in diameter.
Step 2
Find a ball, such as a tennis ball or something slightly larger (Fleur used an oversized Christmas bauble) and squash the wire circle around it to form a ball shape. Remove the ball/bauble from the middle.
Step 3
Use some 0.7mm gauge wire to wrap the wire ball on to the end of a garden stake that has been primed with one coat of Resene Quick Dry followed by two coats of Resene Green House. Wrap the wire around the end of the chicken wire ball. You may find it helpful to cut out some of the bulk of the wire mesh to make it easier to attach to the stake. c
Step 4
Paint on some Resene Galvo-Prime on the chicken wire.
Step 5
Once the primer is dry, paint on a coat of Resene Kingfisher Daisy. Paint over the 0.7mm gauge wire with some more Resene Green House.

Top tip: Paint some of your wire balls in a Resene FX Metallic finish to add extra shimmer to your garden.
