Difficulty level: Moderate
You will need
To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Blanc.
Other ideas: To intensify the rust effect, spray the painting with water after the second layer of activator has dried.
How to make a rusted abstract painting
Mask off a series of rectangular areas on the photo canvas, as shown.
Apply a thin layer of filler over the masked areas, creating texture as you go.
Carefully remove the masking tape and allow the filler to dry.
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the front and edges of the painting and allow to dry.
Apply one coat of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect basecoat to the front and edges of the painting and allow to dry.
Apply a second coat of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect basecoat to the front and edges of the painting.
When this coat is tacky, apply a generous amount of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect activator to the front and edges of the painting. Leave for approximately fifteen minutes.
Stand the painting upright and allow the still wet activator to dribble down the canvas, as shown. Once dry, repeat steps seven and eight, allowing the activator to dribble the other way down the canvas.
