It’s easy to transform a humble piece of MDF into a fabulous chalk board panel with a little bit of help from Resene.

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need

Low-tack masking tape
Paint stirrer
Paintbrush
Piece of 20mm MDF measuring 600mm x 1200mm
Resene FX Chalkboard Paint tinted to Resene Kingfisher Daisy

Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Supernova
Resene Quick Dry
Roller tray and roller sleeves

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Saltpan.

Other ideas: For a blue and red combination use Resene FX Chalkboard Paint tinted to Resene Endeavour and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Chaos.

How to make a chalk board panel

Step 1 Step one
Carefully stir the Resene Quick Dry.

Step 2 Step two
Using a roller, apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the piece of MDF and allow to dry.

Step 3 Step three
Carefully stir the Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Supernova.

Step 4 Step four
Paint a 70mm frame around the edges of the MDF using two coats of Resene Supernova, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step 5 Step five
Use low-tack masking tape to mask a 35mm frame around the edges of the MDF, as shown.

Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Supernova to the edge of the masking tape, as shown, and allow to dry. This will help to prevent the top colour from bleeding through.

Step 7 Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene FX Chalkboard Paint tinted to Resene Kingfisher Daisy.

Step 8 Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene FX Chalkboard Paint tinted to Resene Kingfisher Daisy to the masked off area and allow to dry. Apply a second coat and immediately remove the masking tape. Allow to dry.
