Wooden elephant

Create this fabulous wooden elephant toy for hours of play time enjoyment.

Resene Toys and Games with Mark Rayner - Project 15

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: Clean cloth, Jigsaw, Paintbrush, Piece of 6mm plywood for elephant ears, Piece of 25mm plywood for elephant body (ours measured approximately 300mm x 300mm), Pencil, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Colorwood testpot of Resene Red Beech, PVA glue, Sandpaper

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Mint Tulip.

Other ideas: Wooden toys can also be painted using a selection of Resene testpot colours, but do make sure you prime them first with Resene Quick Dry.

Step 1

Step one
Draw an elephant shape on the piece of 25mm plywood. If you prefer a template to trace around, these can be downloaded and printed from the internet.

Step 2

Step two
Draw two elephant ear shapes on the piece of 6mm plywood.

Step 3

Step three
Carefully cut out these shapes with a jigsaw.

Step 4

Step four
Sand off any pencil marks and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Step 5

Step five
Fix the ears into position with PVA glue and allow to dry.

Step 6

Step six
Carefully apply one coat of Resene Red Beech to the sides of the elephant shape, as shown.

Step 7

Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Red Beech to the front and back of the elephant shape and allow two hours to dry.

Step 8

Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear gloss to the wooden elephant, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
