Prior to refinishing
Step 1 Step one
Plain woven baskets can be updated quickly and easily with a coat of paint. This set of two was ideal to upcycle into a sparkly Christmas centrepiece. The first step is to choose two complementary colours you want to work with. Sarah chose Resene Sumptuous and Resene Balance.
Step 2 Step two
Paint each basket a different colour. Woven and dry textures don’t require sanding or priming but they can still be tricky to paint. Sarah needed to apply two thorough coats, wriggling the testpot brush into all the loops to get full coverage. Wait for the paint to dry in between each coat.
Step 3 Step three
Next, use the opposite colour to apply a splattered paint effect to each basket. You might like to experiment with techniques, but either running your fingers over a loaded brush or simply flicking a loaded brush over the baskets works. Make sure you are doing this in an open space where you won’t inadvertently splatter the walls or furniture!
Step 4 Step four
Once the paint splatters have dried, choose a metallic colour to splatter over both baskets.
Step 5 Step four cont.
Sarah chose to use Resene FX Metallic (Silver Aluminium) to give a festive sparkle.
Step 6Step five
Once all the paint has dried, fill your baskets with Christmas crackers, beads and baubles and use as a modern centrepiece for your table. Merry Christmas!

Upcycling for Good

You can find a huge range of treasures, from ornaments and picture frames, to furniture and toys at your local Salvation Army store that you can easily upcycle with a little Resene paint and some imagination.

"Our Family Stores are full of treasures generously donated by members of the public. We value these donations and try our hardest to re-purpose and sell as much as possible. We’re all about re-using and recycling, so teaming up with Resene on Upcycling for Good was a perfect match. Resene’s products and tips are a natural fit with our pre-loved furniture and accessories, which are usually great quality but could sometimes do with a lick of paint to ensure they fly off the shelves.

Each year, nationally, our stores save 16,000 tonnes from landfill. This initiative increases the value of the donated product, improves the range of goods for our customers, and furthers The Salvation Army’s mission and Resene’s community activity.” Gareth Marshall, The Salvation Army's National Family Store Manager.
