Spring 2021 colour trends

Nothing but blue skies

While open plan spaces offer plenty of benefits, these layouts can create different challenges, such as expansive empty walls. An affordable and convenient alternative to finding just the right artwork to suit your space, home murals have been skyrocketing in popularity and can add a punch of personality in a big way – literally. This tonal rainbow design in Resene Frozen, Resene Spindle, Resene Gelato and Resene Zircon livens up what could have been a flat, one dimensional dining space without deviating from its dusty blue colour scheme. And rather than being isolated to the wall in Resene Half Spindle, this mural breaks typical boundaries by spilling its cheerful energy on to the Resene Half Spindle floor below. As a finishing touch, the lamp, plant pot and stool in Resene Black White add a contrasting point of difference to the palette.

Use matte finishes, such as Resene SpaceCote Flat, to soften a tone-on-tone palette.

Other colours to try with icy blue – deep coastal blues, violet blues or ochre creams.

Second nature

In Scandinavian countries, where winters are cold and long, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere is a way of life. There is even a Danish word for it – hygge. The concept has gained international attention year round as we’ve begun to recognise the benefits that the design of our homes has on our well-being. With its nod to Scandi design, this airy and ethereal bedroom with walls in Resene Triple Merino, floor in Resene Half Merino and a timber headboard finished in Resene Colorwood Whitewash is all about creating a cosy place to rest and rejuvenate. Full of earthy touches such as the sideboard in Resene Hemlock, large vases in Resene Brown Bramble and Resene Sour Dough, plant pot in Resene Cashmere, and its supple natural textures, the space acknowledges the grounding, nurturing and healing effects that nature has on us and the need to refocus on self-care.

Use Resene Colorwood wood stain indoors and Resene Woodsman wood stain outdoors to bring beautiful natural colour to timber.

Other colours to try with light cream – soft grey greens, oranges or celery greens.

Patio party

Gardening is among the world’s most popular and relaxing hobbies, but not everyone with a green thumb is lucky enough to have a large yard to cultivate as much greenery as they might like. If a small patio or balcony is all you have on hand, maximising surface area becomes hugely important – and if you can’t spread out, you might as well spread up! Upcycled crates painted in Resene Zeus and attached to a screen in Resene Gunsmoke free up space by getting smaller plant pots in Resene Quarter Sea Fog up off the ground and table while providing privacy from neighbours and light protection from prevailing winds. And keeping the colour palette of the patio neutral, which features walls in Resene Quarter Friar Greystone, floor in Resene Triple Friar Greystone and a table, chairs and bench in Resene Delta and Resene Gunsmoke, will really make the colour of your plants pop.

When using darker paint colours outdoors, consider using the Resene CoolColour version to better protect your substrate.

Other colours to try with stone grey – grey blacks, grey blues or warm browns.
