Mural theme:
This project focused on creating a school banner (portable mural) to represent Aberdeen School, designed by kids for kids.
Background to mural creation:
Students were asked to design a school banner that speaks Aberdeen and that could be used at school events. Ideally this banner would be placed on the school’s sunshade gazebo and be highly visible.
The ‘hand painted mock version’ is 50% of the final mural size. Hours were spent painting it using Resene testpots. The mock banner is designed to hang in the school office and be a real punchy and eyecatching welcome to all school visitors.
The mural includes the Aberdeen kilt to reflect some Scottish heritage. Bon Accord was also placed with the kilt pattern, which is Aberdeen’s Scottish Motto. It means ‘happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again’. The Aberdeen logo and clan colours were combined to create a superhero mascot for the school – ‘Toru the Koru’ or TK because of the three korus that make up the logo and represent the family, school and the community, with the child in the centre of the koru. The hands were hand drawn and represent all the unique people that make Aberdeen awesome. They are lifting the word ‘Aberdeen’ high into the clouds and stars to show that students try their best.
