Splashbacks

From the decorating inspiration gallery - kitchens

Make the most of your kitchen with a painted colour splashback!

Back-painted glass finished in Resene Imperite 503 from the Resene Engineered Coatings Systems range is a hugely popular option for kitchen splashbacks. Available in a huge range of colours, back painted splashbacks are becoming a key colour feature in modern kitchens and bathrooms. The seamless glass finish can be easily wiped clean.

A handpainted faux tile backsplash using a mix of Resene colours

Elissa Eastwood from Eastwood Environmental Painting created this stunning stencilled and hand-painted ‘tile’ splashback as the star feature of this kitchen. She started with a background in Resene Masala, then applied the stencilled pattern with a custom blend of Resene Masala and Resene Merino to lighten it followed by details in Resene Masala custom blended with Resene Black and highlights in sparkly Resene Gold Dust metallic paint. The adjacent walls are in Resene Merino and the upper cabinets are in Resene Masala.

Choose from thousands of colours from the Resene Total Colour System including striking Resene metallic finishes. Build an interior Resene colour scheme for your kitchen where your walls complement your splashback colour choice.

A glass splashback backpainted with paint gives you a huge range of colour possibilities that can be chosen to work with the rest of your colour scheme. As the paint is on the back the colour is well protected and the surface is easy to keep clean – no cracks, valleys or grouting that kitchen grease can get stuck in. And it can be made custom sized to suit whatever size you need.

A zingy orange splashback painted in Resene Daredevil

When you need a neutral background, simply close the doors (in Resene Black White) of this kitchen, designed by Natalie du Bois, but open the doors to reveal a zingy orange splashback finished in Resene Daredevil. The dark glossy cabinets are Resene Diesel.

It always pays to check the glass being used as one glass type (heat treated low iron oxide clear glass) shows the colour true to colour and standard glass doesn't (standard glass tends to have a greenish tinge to it).

Make sure your splashback supplier is using the correct paint brand and colour otherwise you might be disappointed in the colour. Ensure you insist on Resene Imperite 503 (solid colours) or Resene Imperite 502 (metallic colours) on your splashback to ensure you get the authentic Resene colour you have chosen. Your splashback supplier will apply Resene Imperite direct onto low iron glass. A backing coat of a solid colour (usually grey or black) of Resene Imperite is applied over the metallic basecoat.

A painted glass splashback and island feature in Resene Coastal Blue

This kitchen, in a contemporary cliff-top house designed by Grant McIntyre of Design Construction Home, overlooks the Hauraki Gulf north of Auckland. To enhance the visual link with the ocean, Trinity Interior Design specified an expansive glass splashback and a similar glass panel for the front of the island, both of which are painted in Resene Coastal Blue from the Karen Walker Paints range.

If you're planning a kitchen island, you can easily co-ordinate your splashback with your island by used backpainted glass on each. Paint the back side that fixes against the wall, then all you have is glass exposed to the kitchen which you can easily wipe clean.

While it is possible to paint over an existing splashback, we don't generally recommend paint being applied on top of splashbacks next to stoves or similar, due to the direct exposure of the painted surface to heat, oils/fats and cooking splashes. You would be best to get a new splashback backpainted in your chosen Resene colour, even if you just install it over the existing one (depending on the space available), or if limited room then remove the old and replace with a new one.

A Custom Real Art Kitchen Splashback in a variety of Resene colours

Q. Do you have paint that is coloured and can be applied to the back of a clear glass, splashback?

The paint system is easy to achieve a quality finish. The colour is applied to the reverse side of the glass, so the paint is viewed through the glass once installed. The first step is to clean the glass by wiping with methylated spirits and a clean cloth. Repeat using a different cloth each time. Then spray Resene Imperite IF 503 tinted to your chosen colour. Allow this to cure overnight then apply a coat of the same product, tinted to a medium grey. The backing colour is to avoid any direct contact of the paint colour on the glass, with the fixing adhesive. The fixing adhesive must be a neutral cure type.

If you decide you want to change your splashback colour in the future, the glass splashback can be removed and a new one installed in its place.
