How to make a cute coat rack for kids

What you need

Resene drop cloth
Resene MacGyver paintbrush
Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer
Your chosen Resene paint colours tinted into Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene testpots. We used: Resene Aqua, Resene Suzie Q, Resene Peppermint and, Resene Ballerina in SpaceCote Low Sheen

Scrap wood
15-25mm dowel
Saw
Sandpaper
Short and long screws
Drill
Screwdriver

Stylist's note:

Turn your coat rack into a bathroom towel rack for those summer swims by painting in a range of Resene summer or water-inspired hues using Resene testpots.

Method / steps

Draft a design with an interesting shape and pick your colour combinations. (A)
Protect the floor with a Resene drop cloth.
Use a saw to cut the scrap wood to the desired lengths. Our pieces were between 25cm and 70cm long. (B)
Lay out the planks next to one another and measure the width needed for the backing plank. (C)

Cut the dowel into 6-10cm.
Sand the wood.
Round off the edges of one end of each dowel piece. (D)
Prime all pieces with Resene Quick Dry primer. (E)

Paint the wood pieces in your favourite Resene colours. Paint the dowel in your favourite Resene colours – we alternated colours to contrast with the wood. (F)
Drill pilot holes in the dowel and through the plank where you will place the dowel. (G)
Screw the dowel to the plank from the back, using the long screws. (H)
Use a drill to make pilot holes where each plank will attach to the backing piece. (I)

Closeup - finished project

Screw each plank to the backing piece from behind using the short screws (ensure screws are shorter than the total thickness of the plank and backing piece).
Mount using a method appropriate to your wall type.
Hang the finished coat rack.
