How to make your own creative wall hangings

Everyone loves a Kmart hack, and these circular-shaped wire placemats transform so easily into decorative wall art. Choose the colours and shapes that suit your home best!

Finished wall hangings

You will need

3 x wire placemats like these ones from Kmart
Length of balsa wood from a hardware store
Resene testpot brushes
Craft knife
Nail or small drill bit for making hole

Your choice of cord from a hardware store
Clear-drying glue
Resene testpots in your choice of colours; Sarah used Resene Spring Rain, Resene Desperado, Resene Midnight Moss and Resene Spring Wood.

Top tip: Paint sections of your shapes in Resene FX Nightlight for a glow in the dark effect.

Step 1: Choose four colours for your wall art; Sarah chose Resene Spring Rain, Resene Desperado, Resene Midnight Moss and Resene Spring Wood. Sarah chose the three strongest colours and painted each placemat using a testpot brush. Apply the colour roughly for a rustic finish. If that’s not for you, apply two or three coats.

Step 2: Cut your balsa wood into four even pieces and paint with your chosen colours.

Step 3: Once dry, cut out the shapes you have chosen for your hanging pieces. Sarah decided to hang three rectangles from the base of each placemat, and then glue smaller triangle shapes onto them. Cut and arrange your shapes before gluing into place.

Step 4: Poke a small hole into your hanging pieces and thread with string to hang from the placemats. Find a spot to hang them all side by side in your house or hang one each in the kid’s bedrooms! There are endless ways to personalise these hangings.
