Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 42

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 100mm screws, Clean cloth, Drill with drill bits, Filler, Length of dressed timber to match windowsill (ours measured 50mm x 50mm) Paintbrush, Pencil, Putty knife (or similar), PVA glue, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner, Resene Quick Dry, Saw, Sanding block with sandpaper, Screwdriver, Set square, Tape measure

To get the look: Mark painted the walls with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Alabaster.

How to build a shelf for your kitchen windowsill

 
Step 1Step one
Measure, mark and cut a piece of wood to fit the front of the windowsill. Sand smooth any rough edges.
Step 2Step two
Attach the piece of wood to the front of the windowsill, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and 100mm screws. Drill pilot holes first and countersink the heads.
Step 3Step three
Remove window catches.
Step 4Step four
Fill screw heads and any gaps with filler and allow to dry.
Step 5Step five
Wipe the paintwork clean using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and a clean cloth, following product instructions.
Step 6Step six
Sand any filled areas smooth and wipe off sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 7Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to any bare wood and filled areas. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Enamacryl to the entire windowsill and frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Replace window catches.

Other ideas: Create a strong accent by painting the windowsill with a brightly contrasting colour such as Resene Get Reddy.
