St Peters Lutheran College

Brisbane

Ross Roy was built in 1897 for a tea merchant and sold in 1910 to a pastoralist who named the property Ross Roy.

St Peters Lutheran College - detail

It is a grand architect designed mansion of the nineteenth century, a detailed example of the late Victorian era and therefore of aesthetic significance. It was sold in 1945 with six acres of land to the Lutheran Church and began a new life as a secondary college.

The roof is tiled with terracotta and the walls are patterned bricks. The ceilings are ornate plaster with decorative cornices. All of the joinery including the staircase is finished with red cedar. The fireplace mantles are in matte with tessellated tile hearths. There are extensive lead lights with many having etched portraits. The ceilings are constructed of lathe pine, and the walls are rendered. The veranda floors are tongue and groove, unusual for an external application. Although there have been changes over the years the building retains its grandeur and being perched on high ground affords it panoramic views.

The aim was to retain the original colours, of which there was no record. Scrapings were taken and forwarded to Resene. The matchings were perfect and named accordingly – Mid Bristol Green, St Peters Cream and Strath Creek Green – teamed with Resene White on fretwork. The paint finish needed to stand the test of time, be readily cleaned and be vibrant; Resene Hi-Glo was chosen. The finish speaks for itself with many compliments on the gloss and depth of colour. Some remediation work was carried out on the timber with Resene TimberLock used prior to Resene Quick Dry and Resene topcoats to give the ultimate in protection.

Resene Furniture and Decking Oil was used on the two decks for ease of maintenance.

While work was being carried out, the building had to remain open. Scaffolding was done in stages using static scaffold and boom lifts.

The result is a splendid building that is not only steeped in history but has enormous visual impact through architecture and appropriate use of colour.
