caring for the carers

Harbour Hospice provides compassionate, specialist care to those with life limiting illness and supporting whanau and caregivers.

Meeting room

They are dedicated to supporting wellbeing in every way – medically, spiritually, psychologically and socially.

There was a need for more office space with the merging of various sites and Hibiscus Hospice’s original architects had used foresight and allowed for growth, leaving the basement to be developed for a future office. GHDWoodhead creativespaces were engaged to help create an office space. Located in a dark, dingy storage basement with louvre windows and fluorescent lighting, the area was completely fitted-out to transform it in to modern, fresh, calm desirable working environment.

The client’s brief was for a “comfortable, bright, space that had a breakout area that could take them away and help them switch off”. To achieve this all the louvre windows were replaced with large picture windows, punched through the concrete block wall, adding bi-folding doors and a sunny deck. The social breakout hub was designed to be the feature among the friendly spacious 30 person office.

As light flooded in, the open plan office was kept neutral with a soft coastal, residential feel, using Resene Half Sea Fog on the general walls and Resene Sea Fog on doors. Coastal tones of Resene Breeze and Resene Triple Sea Fog against timber joinery, duck egg soft furniture, and amber glass pendants worked well with the herringbone carpet planks in grey with flecks of pale blue.

The combination of their logo’s native kowhai flower and coastal location of the site inspired the colour scheme. Upon entry Resene Celebrate is the bold and memorable background for the vision wall. This leads the eye down to the breakout space feature wall, using the contrast of the golden warm Resene Celebrate against the calmness of Resene Breeze, creating a striking and unexpected feature. A further feature wall is warm and welcoming in Resene Starbell. The nature inspired kitchen and furniture in timber and whites, flowing out to the new deck and gardens is a positive, uplifting retreat.

The original cold clinical bathrooms shared by the office and conference room were refreshed continuing the coastal/residential concept, using a tropical graphic wallpaper, Resene Breeze, timber partitioning, and new modern vanity, mirrors and lighting.

The transformation was remarkable. The client was delighted and feedback from staff and visitors has been glowing in praise. At Hospice they believe “it’s about living every moment, in whatever way is important to you.” This office space not only functions well for the dedicated staff but it also feels calm, elegant and uplifting.

Resene Zylone Sheen was used throughout for its low and no added VOCs and its ability to work well with graphic treatments. This was teamed with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel. The Resene Vivid Wallpaper design with a bold graphic print was used in place of large artist’s murals due to cost and dramatic effect. The bold modern tropical print helps create a feeling of escapism and relaxation. While the transformation is dramatic, the project was very cost conscious ensuring every cent was spent wisely.
