Te Puke O Tara Community Centre

Auckland

The Te Puke O Tara Community Centre is a council-owned building used by a variety of community groups. The original building was designed by Jasmax and built in the 1970s and provided a variety of facilities including meeting rooms, kitchen facilities and a hall.

Pacific Environments Architects were approached by Auckland Council to revamp the facility. This included, among other things, creating an ‘entry’ to the Community Centre side of the complex from the main foyer which also served the pool complex, opening up of the meeting spaces (which included removal of a mezzanine floor), provision for a future IT Hub, an upgrade of kitchen and toilet facilities, and improving light and ventilation to the main hall area.

The inspiration for the new colour palette initially came from the community itself who made it known that bright, vibrant colours were important to the Pasifika people. Working with this brief for colour the design team looked to elements of the original building (such as typical 70s door signs) and the neighbouring pool complex colours for ideas. This led to using four main colours – red (Resene Red Berry), orange (Resene Tango), yellow (Resene Turbo) and green (Resene Lima). Selected rafters were painted in Resene Spanish White or stained with Resene Japanese Maple.

‘Blocks’ of colour are used to denote the different areas and functions of spaces in the complex, which also assists in wayfinding. For example the central kitchen and bathroom facilities are cloaked in a bright yellow battened wall finished in Resene Turbo acting as a reference point in the complex as it is visible from most points in the facility. The Hub is a contrasting orange, using Resene Tango, and an obvious marker for a different function, in this case the IT Hub.

Outside, bold Resene Jalapeno leads the way teamed with Resene Friar Grey and Resene Spanish White.
