Luna Estate

Martinborough

Luna Estate contracted Victoria Rea Architecture to manage a complete renovation of a disused winery building that they had on their estate.

The entire winery needed earthquake strengthening with additional renovations needed to the cellar door and restaurant and to enable extensive outdoor spaces.

The design reflects the rural context and the barrels and tanks involved in the wine making process itself. Barrelled ceilings of American White Oak contrast with white brick walls and black steel accents. Timber used outside is brought into the interior in a more refined way bringing warmth and texture and providing a richness to the design. Black painted walls along the spine of the building anchor the rooms to the earth and reflect the fact that the building is in fact built into the hill.

The counters and joinery are American white oak with dark benchtops - these complement the reds and golds of the wine as it is poured and tasted and is designed to enhance the wine tasting experience.

Serving room

A hint of fun is injected into the bathroom area with the bathrooms each featuring a different pastel colour – Resene Viola, Resene Opal, Resene Escape and Resene Roxy – teamed with pastel tiling for a full colour immersion. This colour direction reflected the client personalities and has become a definite talking point for customers.

The cooking kitchen was to be partially open to the eating space so it was important to continue the theme of the restaurant inside. Fresh Resene Milk White provides an airy and light feeling to contrast with the dark moody Resene Fuscous Grey walls along the spine of the building. In the kitchen area the Resene Milk White is applied over Murus panels for extra dimension.

The overall aesthetic is an elegant take on the rural context – it is relaxing and welcoming.

The winery had originally built in several stages – when we took off the existing linings we realised it had not been constructed to the original design. This presented various challenges which needed to be overcome during construction.
