Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Mokopuna

Wellington

This colour scheme is not neutral. It uses primary red and lime green as wall colours along with bright red vinyl and native hardwood floors.

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Mokopuna

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Nga Mokopuna moved to Seatoun just over 10 years ago to a Ministry of Education property, which the Seatoun Primary School had recently vacated. The 1930s hall building had been relocated to the site by the Seatoun community in the early 1990s and was in need of significant work. The project included replacement of windows and doors, an upgrade of the kitchen facilities and refurbishment of the toilets and showers, as well as seismic strengthening and upgrade of fire protection services.

For BKB Team Architects this was the third significant project with Te Kura. The earlier new build projects were the Whare Kura (secondary) and Tuakana (junior primary) classroom blocks. Architect Peter Beaumont had worked closely with Mere Hawaikirangi, the school administrator, on each of these projects and it was this well-established relationship that enabled them to collaborate on the interior finishes and colour selections.

This colour scheme is not neutral. It uses primary red and lime green as wall colours along with bright red vinyl and native hardwood floors. Secondary elements such as doors and window frames are given a neutral mid tone grey, which helps unify the colour concept. Kitchen joinery and appliances in black, grey and stainless steel, complement the red flooring. The colour scheme is toned back in the reworked toilets; blue vinyl to floors and wet walls and a mix of clear-coated particle board and white painted walls.

The starting point for the interior colour scheme was the inlaid flooring pattern in the foyer of the Tuakana block, where a swirling koru motif was realised in red, green and black vinyl. The client was keen to make an equally strong statement in the refurbished hall, using colour to give a bold and distinctive interior, asserting a powerful presence. The interior also needed to work as a background for a number of artworks, created by the kura whanau, to be displayed on the walls of the hall and dining room.

Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Monza was selected, a bold red, matching the flooring vinyl. As this colour fills half the walls of the hall, an equally strong green, Resene Wild Willow was chosen to ‘balance’ this. The new structural steel portal across the body of the hall is finished in Resene Burgundy, a deep red, which worked equally well with the two strong wall colours and the white ceiling in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream.

Bathroom walls and upper walls in the kitchen are finished in Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom in Resene Double Thorndon Cream, ceilings in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and window joinery, trim and timber doors in Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Half Tuna.

A large painted triptych based on a historic carved lintel from Nga Puhi, donated by a member of the whanau, occupies a prime location at the rear of the stage. The painting is stunning against the red wall, and rich timber flooring.

Important to the success of the colour scheme was the selection of the other materials and finishes which make up the interior. Apart from the bright vinyl flooring the other finishes all sit within a neutral tonal range from white to black.
