Auckland
The designers looked to colour to make the difference, rather than falling back on the more obvious and conventional choice of using a white or grey based scheme.
The Chancery car park site has had a variety of uses over the years including a past life as the successful Auckland Le Brie restaurant. Approached by the local representatives of the Investment Company owners, two colour scheme alternatives were requested to upgrade the car park. The designers looked to colour to make the difference, rather than falling back on the more obvious and conventional choice of using a white or grey based scheme.
The colour selection process was started by printing the images out on A4 paper and going through paint colour charts. The first selection of colours appeared too bright so was toned down by selecting more muddy muted tones of Resene Adventure, Resene Wasabi, Resene Takaka and Resene Whizz Bang. The proposed colour palette then needed to be sent electronically to Hong Kong for approval by the investment company owners.
The car park leaves a great reflection against the mirrored buildings it is next to and integrates well with the park on the other side and the Northern Club above it. It also looks fabulous from the side with the colours peeping through. It makes an impact statement that just because it is a car park it doesn’t necessarily need to be boring.
Three of the impact colours were used to code the entrances to match the P1, P2 and P3 entrances so that this had the added advantage of people being able to enter at a specific coloured entrance.
