collab of cool

EROAD

EROAD are at heart an IT company with the core of the team being engineers that design devices for fleet management globally.

Eroad meeting IT space

The peripheral but equally important aspects of the team, also situated at the head office, advise and coordinate the manufacture and sale of systems to end users to enhance the productivity of their fleet and service offerings.

COO Jarred Clayton was the EROAD Project Sponsor and at the first design workshop to unearth what was important for him and the team to reflect in the design he offered a one sentence response - 'A high energy working environment where cool sh*t is being done' – this was a mantra the design team had at the forefront of their minds throughout the rest of the design process, using this to guide decisions on design.

Throughout the initial stages of taking the brief the design team discovered that although they needed to create an IT environment to suit the engineers they were not trying to emulate a Google and were actually a very down to earth, well-structured company who are proud of what they do and how they do it. They were inclusive across the different elements of the business and worked in multiple teams at multiple time to achieve the client goal. The design solution needed to emulate that.

EROAD were in two offices; the fit-outs of both had been inherited from previous tenants. The task was to refurbish the main building and relocate the two separate teams into one environment. The existing layout was inefficient and disorienting with multiple corridors and offices of various sizes and multiple café/tea points that meant most teams were operating in silos. The Engineering Team, who do the Research and Development for all their products worldwide, the Corporate team and the New Zealand Business (NZ Business) – that included Sales and Customer Support - were separated and isolated across the floor. The goal was to bring together these very different business roles and personalities under one roof and to create an environment that worked for everyone. It was also the aim of the project to increase the potential occupancy of the building to ensure it would be able to accommodate EROAD to the end of the renewed lease term.

The work needed to be achieved on a strict budget while EROAD remained in situ to mitigate sunk costs on temporary space allowing more to be spent on the fit-out. This was the challenge - make a little go a long way. Paint was the answer – use it to create splashes of colour to add vibrancy to a neutral palette.

EROAD’s corporate colours are red, white and black. Red has been limited to splashes only as there are plans to add large graphic images of company imagery to reinforce their branding. The finishes in the town square are kept simple with the use of white tiles, Strand Board and concrete looking vinyl tiles chosen for their acoustic properties. The design was kept simple, timeless and durable. Angled partitions were used to break up the formality of the space while timber look wallpaper was added as a cost-effective solution along with primary Resene colours to contrast the black ceiling in the town square.

Features in Resene Half Resolution Blue, Resene Howzat, Resene Double Foundry and Resene Half Grey Chateau add interest against neutral walls of Resene Half Black White and timber joinery clear finished in Resene Aquaclear. Walls throughout are painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen with trim and joinery in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel.

Most of the innovation was in crafting the design out of a tight budget – angling the walls to create a feature that is essentially cost neutral. It was also what was left out – completely open corners which because of the layout become effective stand up meeting spaces. The stand-up monitoring stations are designed to be flexible with triangular shelves open at both ends which allow different products to be plugged in and monitored/tested easily.

For EROAD the main innovation has been that they can all gather together in a cool space and then project those meetings to their other offices worldwide, live – so it is truly a collaborative space.
