the right grey

Devonport, Auckland

Built in 1910 one entire side, and the rear lower level, of this Devonport villa is brick.

The bricks are a bright orange shade and are rough old textured type of brick. Although this is not a typical villa, it was not uncommon for villas in the 1900s to have these orange brick walls.

The windows along the side brick wall and on the rear lower brick wall area have larger than normal surrounds. This meant that whatever colour was chosen for the windows and surrounds, it had to ‘make a statement’ and at the same time complement the bright orange style of brick.

As an artist the client has an acute eye for colour and can pick up various hues in the paint that the average person could not. The challenge was to find exactly the shade of grey that suited her vision while still suiting the heritage suburb. Many testpots and samples later, Resene Innocence proved to be the perfect green grey. It also had desired blue hues in certain lights.

All the joinery was painted Resene Lustacryl in Resene Innocence, with the grey green shade being clean and crisp when paired with the orange brick. The balance of the windows and trim were painted in Resene Quarter Tapa so that they stood out next to the main house colour Resene Innocence, while still complementing each other.

At different angles and with different shade and light, the Resene Innocence colour appears to change throughout the day. These differences in visual appearance complement the colour scheme providing contrast between the different surfaces. In some lights the green hues in the paint stand out and at other times the grey hues stand out.

Weatherboards and plaster fence areas painted in Resene Lumbersider in Resene Innocence are grounded with deep Resene Grey Friars on the deck and rails.

Thrilled with the colour choices, the client can enjoy coming home to a home that reflects her personality for many years to come.
