The Berra

Canberra

The intent was to create a work that was reflective of Canberra and represented icons of the place George spent so many of her formative years in.

The mural displays a number of local botanicals – Gang Gangs and Royal Bluebell’s, which are used on the ACT State emblem. A key part of the mural is a white cockatoo, which used to be common along Northbourne Avenue. Other elements include the Parliamentary triangle as represented on a map, as seen from a satellite. George’s random mark making of Canberra is complemented by scribbled gum moth patterns, brittle gum nuts and leaves, symbolic of the new seedlings planted along Northbourne. There’s a Eucalyptus Rosii for the original trees along Northbourne.

To tie everything in, George’s abstract brushstrokes create a visual connection and movement around the 3-dimensional mural. Nestled into the design are horizontal elevations represented by surrounding ranges featuring Black Mountain, Mount Majura and Bruce Ridge Nature Reserve. There’s also a topographical elevation of Mount Ainslie. All these objects, and line-work equate to personal experiences by George.

The colours chosen were based on very Australian landscape, with a palette of Resene Adrenalin, Resene Clockwork Orange, Resene Daredevil, Resene Galliano, Resene Havoc, Resene Persian Red, Resene Havoc and Resene White, all painted using Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne paint. This is the real inspiration. Earthy tones complement the green leaves in summer and to bring warmth to the area in winter when the deciduous plants have shed their foliage.

As an unforeseen challenge on this project, George broke her finger on this project and was rushed to hospital. She jammed her finger in between a heavy door on the side of the structure. She broke the very top of her finger bone, lost her nail and required surgery.

This project is part of a body of work that won the Resene Total Colour Visual Art Award. The judges said "an incredible body of work, bold interpretations and colour palettes bring streetscapes and public spaces to life in a true celebration of colour and artistry. The works are so over scaled to suit each environment. With an underlying style, the art is reinvented with each brief so that each work truly shines on its own. Harnessing an enviable eye for colour, the colour palettes and proportions are beautifully and brilliantly intertwined."
