beach home

Mount Maunganui

The brief for this one storey brick and tile home by the beach in Mount Maunganui was to create a contemporary, minimal garage and office alongside this existing home.

There was also a requirement to future proof and allow for a second stage. Stage one being the garage and office design as a one storey new build and with that design it would then be mimicked on the existing home as a second storey dwelling as Stage Two.

Exterior detail of study

The design had to not only connect to the existing home but be a focalpoint, give great street appeal, create a modern ‘working from home’ space and be a bold feature as a separate identity for stage one or combined in stage two.

The product choices and colour were also paramount to not only tie the two buildings together but to also give a striking and seamless cohesive appeal for all stages.

Exterior

The end result was executed with contemporary elements used including plywood and cedar with black commercial joinery and complemented with a Resene Waterborne Woodsman in Resene Pitch Black wood stain that created edgy soft tones to not only showcase the new but to also blend with the existing and allow for that connection of stage two in the near future.

Inspiration for the exterior colour came from the new build being a modern feature and connecting it with the existing house colour. The colour needed to be striking, edgy and balanced highlighting the natural products in the cladding and also connecting it with the existing home.

Bunk beds bedroom

Inspiration for the office interior colour palette came from the space and its surroundings. As a ‘working from home’ space it needed to be light, bright and relaxed and to also highlight the natural elements used in the space and give edge, contrast and depth.

Inspiration also had to come from connecting the new build with the existing for both stage one and stage two.

Study window detail

This was executed by the use of a natural look varnish with Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane varnish on the plywood. It gave such a subtle, soft glow that blended and complemented its surroundings. Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta was chosen for walls. Not only did this combination of the varnish and soft warm off white showcase the natural products used but it also complemented and blended both the new and existing and created a contemporary, spacious office environment.
