Resene anti-graffiti products

Coatings have a role to play in combating graffiti by providing smooth sealed surfaces that prevent penetration. As the coating then becomes the layer that receives the graffiti, it in itself must be able to resist the cleaning agents and strong solvents used to remove the offending messages. This necessitates the use of very hard, densely cross-linked coatings, such as specially formulated two pack epoxies or polyurethanes with solvent resistance as their chief parameter.

Anti-graffiti paints should be specified as a system. When upgrading existing coatings some softer PVA and waterborne coatings are less tolerant to hard solvent containing topcoats so must be sealed off with multi-layers of tougher acrylics and where possible, the use of anti-graffiti topcoats with less aggressive solvents in them.

The Resene coating most commonly used as an anti-graffiti system is Resene Uracryl (see Data Sheets R54-RA59), which combines superb exterior durability with graffiti resistance. Although the graffiti resistance of many existing coated surfaces can be improved by overcoating with Resene Uracryl, best results are achieved when the system is applied at the time of construction.

Sealants in expansion joints should not be painted over with two pack products or cracking of the paint and then the sealant is likely. Often the method of application dictates the product to be used.

When specifying anti-graffiti coatings, bear in mind that anti-graffiti coatings will be wasted on areas inaccessible to humans, such as the seventh floor exterior walls of a building. Coatings will not develop full solvent resistance (and therefore graffiti resistance) for at least a week, longer in winter.

Surface colour is a consideration for discouraging the application of graffiti. Mid tones are less attractive to graffiti artists than white or pastel, while multi-coloured patterns are also helpful in camouflaging the appearance of the attack.

The technique for removal is crucial – if left too long, the solvent may cause the graffiti to penetrate deeper into the surface leaving a shadow.

Solvents used to clean off graffiti need to be strong enough to remove the graffiti without affecting the underlying coating. They also require an evaporation rate which is not too fast otherwise the graffiti becomes smeared over the surface and re-dries as the solvent evaporates. The ideal cleaning solvent will remain wet long enough for the surface to be wiped clean. Resene Graffiti Cleaner is a low evaporating, low odour solvent system, which will facilitate the removal of most graffiti. Immediate attention to removing graffiti is always good practice. Cleaning leaves the surface vulnerable to staining if re-tagged within twenty four hours.

For the most efficient obliteration of graffiti damage, which cannot be removed, we recommend Resene Contractor or for a range of darker options, Resene TagCover.

More on VOCs

In response to growing concerns over VOC emissions, the Eco Choice programme focuses on the need to reduce these emissions. Solventborne paints release significantly more VOCs per litre than waterborne paints, spurring Resene chemists to develop waterborne replacements for solventborne products. Today, less than 8% of the decorative paint sold by Resene is solventborne, while the average per litre VOC levels of Resene decorative paint sales have dropped by over 90% in the last two decades, clearly demonstrating Resene's commitment to proactively develop and launch environmentally preferable waterborne technologies to the market. Resene offers an extensive range of low VOC and no added VOC paints, coatings, stains/primers and sealers, including no added VOC tinters.

Environmentally responsible packaging

Resene metal packaging includes recycled material and is printed using U.V. inks and varnishes ensuring energy savings and no emissions. A selection of Resene product label artwork is available from this section and is provided as a handy reference. The label on a pack you purchase may differ depending on the age of the stock you are purchasing and when the pack changes over to the newer label artwork. Resene paper labels are printed on environmentally responsible paper, which complies with the requirements of environmental management systems EMAS and ISO14001, using vegetable inks. Resene prints brochures, flyers etc on sustainable paper stocks wherever possible. When you download some pdf files from this website they will refer to being printed on sustainable paper stock. This is because they are an electronic copy of what we distribute to our customers.
