How to make your own pencil holder

Habitat bright ideas with Fleur Thorpe – DIY projects

Create a colourful pencil holder with a block of wood painted in creative geometric patterns. Fleur Thorpe shows you how.

You will need

Instructions

Step 1:  Cut your wood to a 90mm length. Use sandpaper to remove any rough edges. Mark where you want your holes to go. (Photo 1).

Step 2:  Use an electric drill with an 8mm drill bit to drill your holes. Try to keep the drill as straight up and down as possible while drilling. Use sandpaper to remove any rough bits.  Rolling up a small piece of sandpaper is a good way of sanding the insides of the holes. (Photo 2).

Step 3:  Use a compass to draw a circle on the top and half circles on the sides of the block. If you don’t have a compass, use a jar lid. (Photo 3).

Step 4:  With a small artist paintbrush, paint in the circles using Resene Influential, Resene Vibe and Resene Undercurrent. (Photo 4).

Step 5:  Experiment with different lengths of wood block and different painting techniques. Painters masking tape gives a great straight edge and using the end of a small paintbrush is a good way of getting uniform dots. (Finished project).

Top tip: For a little extra pizzazz, use a Resene FX Metallic testpot which will catch the light and add a touch of glimmer.
