A colourful kitchen is inspired by history.

When Amanda Hereaka and Simon Bowden were planning renovations to their 1940s Wellington house, they took the new kitchen look directly from history. Inspired by the Art Deco detailing in the house and the distinctive block-colour artworks of Piet Mondrian, they decided to paint the doors and drawer fronts of the kitchen in a range of colours rather than just the usual one.

Keeping the shape of the kitchen very clean and linear, the couple used Resene Soapstone, Resene Moonbeam, Resene Pattens Blue, Resene Blue Night and Resene Jalapeno. These colours are used singularly in other areas of the house, but all come together in what Amanda says is definitely the heart of the home.

“Deciding on which colour to put where was much more difficult than we thought it would be – to get a good balance and not let it be overpowering,” says Amanda. Their architect, Hayley Whitehead of N & Co, designed the kitchen and did a computer mock-up of the colour placement, which was then fine-tuned.

The couple is thrilled with the result, and with the input of painter Joseph Painter and the joiners Living Timber.

Amanda and Simon were second place winners in our Resene Electrolux laundry competition from the Summer 2008 issue; the washing machine prize has come in handy, especially with their birth of twins late last year.
