Flower motifs

Kids' Corner from Your Home and Garden magazine

A posy of simple flower motifs in a few punchy hues are all you need to create this bright and beautiful room for kids of all ages

Flower motifs, flower pinboards

Wall flowers

This fun floral room design is very adaptable and could suit a baby, a young child or even a teenager.

Taking the floral duvet cover as our starting point for the scheme, we sketched a series of flowers on the wall with a pencil, then painted them using Resene testpots. The flower shapes are not perfect – they all have a deliberately handmade, childlike look.

A cluster of flowers above the bed is all you need to create a focal point. We also made some cute flower pinboards to sit above the desk and link that side of the room into the theme.

Easy Headboard

Step 1:  To create this arch headboard, you will need 1 piece of 1200mm x 900mm x 9mm MDF. Measure 45cm down from the top (a short edge) and make a pencil mark on each side. Find the midpoint between those marks and make a pencil mark there.

Step 2:  Tie a piece of string to your pencil and fix the other end to the centre mark with a drawing pin; the string must be 45cm long. Keeping the string taut, use the pencil to draw a semicircle from one mark to the other.

Step 3:  Cut out the arch with a jigsaw and give the edges a quick sand with sandpaper before painting in your chosen colour. You will need at least 2 coats of Resene Lustacryl paint, allowing each to dry before applying the next. For a good finish use a roller.

Flower pinboards

Keep your desk clutter-free by creating fun pinboards to coordinate with your flower-power theme.

Using some Blu-Tack, position a cork placemat on the wall, draw around it with a pencil and set it aside. Draw a flower shape around the circle and paint the petals using a Resene testpot; a small craft paint brush will work best here. Paint the placemat in the Resene testpot colour of your choice and, when dry, attach to the wall with Velcro strips.
