Second time lucky

Pip and her family purchased this property after falling in love with the character of the home. Major renovations had been completed around 10 years ago to modernise the house and create a more open plan living area. Luckily the kitchen and bathrooms (an ensuite had been added) had been upgraded too before they moved in.

The only factor of the house they weren’t so much in love with was the wallpaper and the kitchen feature wall colour. Pip was really keen to freshen this look up and bring more light into the house. She found the rooms quite busy with the wallpaper and all the furniture. Pip has a love for trawling second hand shops and repurposing old furniture.

The first room to change was the kitchen. The blue feature wall really didn’t suit the rest of the house and needed to change ASAP. Pip painted this herself with leftover paint from the entrance way. As the house has a lot of wood Pip wanted to stick with greens, browns etc to create continuity throughout the house. The colour of the kitchen feature wall is now Resene Double Sisal, which works brilliantly with the collection of red goodies.

After living in the house for over a year Pip decided it was time to make a move on getting rid of the busy wallpaper. Pip decided to call in the experts for painting the bedrooms and living area.

She found it really hard to choose the colour and ended up overthinking it. Pip says her biggest mistake was choosing from the swatches rather than getting some testpots and trying them out.

The first colour she chose for the bedrooms was much too light for the house and the Resene Spanish White ceiling and window surrounds. After the painter had completed the spare bedroom Pip really wasn’t happy with the colour – lucky he was very patient and painted on the second darker colour – Resene Half Sisal.

A similar story happened with the lounge and living area. The original colour ended up looking very blue once up on the wall. A couple of rushed trips back and forward from the Resene ColorShop before closing for the day the painter and Pip tried out some greener testpots and decided on Resene Lemon Grass as the final colour. Murray Proctor, the painter, suggested this colour as he had recently painted a lounge this colour and thought it was the kind of colour Pip was after. He was correct and Pip loves the final outcome!

Pip is going to use the leftover Quarter Sisal (original bedroom colour choice) to paint the office in the garage which is currently yellow.

Thanks to Pip.
