All in good time

Jason purchased his 1920s bungalow, as a first home, right in the midst of the property rush. It was love at first sight but even though it had amazing character it was rundown in need of some work.

Not scared of getting his hands dirty and keen to learn all the tricks of the trade, this project is proving to be a slow but rewarding journey that has involved work on pretty much every part of the house. For the first couple of years Jason was away lots for work so he didn’t make much progress other than sorting all the fencing out, constructing an electronic gate and working on some landscaping.

The first interior space Jason took on was the master bedroom (the original lounge of the 20s house but now with fireplace removed). The ceiling and one wall needed to be relined due to warping panels and damage. As part of this Jason designed a bespoke ceiling rose and fitted a large matt black iron chandelier. Jason also built a wardrobe to match the existing detailing. The feature wall is MDF tongue-and-groove paneling to add even more character to the space.

At this point here Jason did not know where to start for colours. The team at the Resene ColorShop in New Lynn were very helpful and set Jason on the right path with great recommendations.

The master bedroom is painted in Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and trims with Resene Sea Fog on three of the walls and Resene Shadowy Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection on the tongue-and-groove feature wall. The blue looks great as a backdrop for timber furniture as well as the petrol blue pendants.

The second space completed was the bathroom. Bringing the same tongue-and-groove look in as a feature wall and backdrop for the custom vanity and mirror. The vanity is an old oak dresser that Jason has upcycled by cutting the legs off and mounting a basin in the top. The whole look ties in very well with the round mirror, glass and oak pendant and Resene Shadowy Blue. The other walls in the bathroom are painted in Resene Quarter Tea, which has a nice warmth to it with a little pinky undertone. The ceiling and trims are again Resene Alabaster.

The original Matai flooring has been repaired with recycled Matai, sanded back before coating with Resene Qristal ClearFloor in a satin finish to give a lovely warmth to the living and hallway. Jason has also retained some of the Rimu timber trims as part of the kitchen rebuild, coated in Resene Qristal Clear.

With a couple more rooms to complete Jason has learnt so much through this process while really enjoying adding his own ideas and design flair to bring this old house back to life.

Thanks to Jason.
