Jungle fun

This 1975 semi-detached two bedroom house looked like it had never been redecorated. There was old carpet, brown laminate doors and 1970s wallpaper everywhere.

For over a year Liz had promised her daughter that when they got a new house she could choose however she wanted her room to be decorated. So now they had bought this home, it was time to make good on this promise.

Birds and a rainbow walll

Liz’s daughter loves animals and nature and chose to have a jungle themed bedroom. Having bought the house, money was tight and the only way to do it was to paint it themselves.

Liz set about painting the ceiling white (with help from her brother). Icky old brown laminate bedroom door and wardrobe doors were painted fresh white as were the window sills, window frame, inside the wardrobe and the skirting boards (with help from her mum, sister, sister in law and nieces). Liz then painted all the walls Resene Anakiwa as a background colour.

Trees and lions

The next stage was the most fun. One weekend Liz and her daughter got a box of white chalk and started the jungle design. They drew animals, trees, plants all over the walls. Liz’s daughter, with her delightful 6 year old imagination and talent, drew a flying squirrel, a fox, rabbits, koalas, peacock, a fabulous zebra, giraffe, tiger, a beautiful stripe-less and wingless bee, a frog, a ladybird, birds and butterflies. They also added a waterfall, sun, rainbow and even a pot of gold at the bottom of the rainbow. They traced over all the chalk with permanent black marker pens.

Monkeys and birds

With the design ready to go, Liz and her daughter bought a couple of dozen of the most beautiful and brightest colours in Resene testpots – Resene Tree Frog, Resene Dark Buff, Resene Iron, Resene Quarter Turbo, Resene Salsa, Resene Irish Coffee, Resene Anise, Resene Dynamite, Resene Studio, Resene Adrenalin, Resene Lochmara, Resene Calibre, Resene Fringy Flower, Resene Energy Yellow, Resene Simply Red, Resene Governor Bay, Resene Japanese Laurel, Resene Cupid, Resene All Black, Resene Fugitive, Resene Snowy Mint, Resene Wild Thing, Resene Havoc, Resene Half Stack, Resene Dizzy Lizzy and Resene Wham. Animals, plants, trees and all the other jungle features were soon painted and looking bright, happy and colourful. The room had finally been transformed from a dingy old 70s bedroom to a fabulous and exciting jungle room.

Thanks to Liz.
