Deep and restorative

Today we feel no boundaries when it comes to bringing colour and texture and pattern into our bathrooms.

If truth can be told it’s that the sterile bathrooms of yesteryear are indeed a thing of the past. No longer after afterthought, the days of stark, utilitarian rooms devoid of colour and personality have passed.

Mood board: Background painted in Resene Double Sea Fog. Resene A4 drawdown pain swatches in, left to right, Resene Top Notch, Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Secrets, Resene Green Spring and Resene Double Sea Fog and tray in Resene Top Notch.  Accessories: Mirror, basin and tapware from Plumbline, chair from Soren Liv, bath products from Aesop.

Today we feel no boundaries when it comes to bringing colour and texture and pattern into our bathrooms. In this space, where we get ready for the day as the sun comes up and prepare for bed in the evening, they can bring to life our design tastes and preferences, packed with personality.

This lush, eye-catching bathroom features a strong, yet calming, muted holly green; bold and strong, it draws the eye in. But it is equally calming, soft and serene for those who enter this space. Resene Top Notch is our hero hue, and with this everyday feel like a rejuvenating walk in a tropical rainforest or native bush.

Resene greens such as this one are the link to the natural world. Their effect brings calm and restoration to our lives; order and harmony rings true.

From Resene rich forest greens to teal-toned hues, fresh grassy shades to emerald delights, green can present itself in varied forms.

A bold and dramatic bathroom

A bathroom with bold colour and texture

Paint: Walls and small table painted in Resene Top Notch, marbled wall in Resene Top Notch with a combination of Resene Green Spring, Resene Secrets, Resene Bokara Grey applied over the top with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed in to each colour and applied with a dabbing motion with a sponge. Marbled veining drawn on with a small paint brush and lightly rubbed over to soften edges. Floor in Resene Double Sea Fog, door in Resene Bokara Grey, clothes hanger and top of wash basin in Resene Bokara Grey, tray on top of washbasin and hat boxes in Resene Top Notch, extra hat boxes in Resene Green Spring, Resene Top Notch, Resene Secrets and Resene Cinnamon and vase with flowers in Resene Element.

The deep tones of Resene Top Notch give our bathroom a stable yet peaceful feel. Its tones are rich and bold by nature, providing the space with a surprising sense of calm and serenity. The fact that this sits in a bathroom is ideal given it is a place to escape from the hectic nature of a busy household and to-do lists of daily life.

Resene Top Notch works elegantly next to the dark personality of Resene Bokara Grey, a warming, smouldering charcoal. By bringing in this perfect accent colour we create a smouldering pair, reminiscent of the jungle or tropics at midnight, heady with scent and a feast for the senses.

This tonal palette is fitting for a bathroom, a room dedicated to restoring the senses and nourishing the soul. Calming and inspiring, it is a replenishing haven and a pleasure to be in. This emphasis on wellness for the mind body and spirit provides balance to our lives, calling for us to pause and redirect our attention to calmness.

Within this peaceful retreat we also see a focus on clean lines and design curves, easy on the eye with an aesthetic that is welcoming and comforting.

With Resene Bokara Grey and Resene Top Notch providing the colour base, we soften the scene with a layer of visual texture. Replicating the ripple pattern found in marble so commonly used in bathrooms, we painted our own version of this texture on one wall and the side table. The first layer of colour is Resene Top Notch, on top of which is a blend of Resene Green Spring, Resene Secrets and Resene Bokara Grey painted on top, using Resene FX Paint Effects Medium combined into each hue. It is then applied by way of a dabbing motion with a sponge. For a deeper, more detailed layer of interest, we drew veins on with a small paint brush and lightly rubbed over to as to soften the edges.

To counterbalance the moody palette, the floor is painted in the light, neutral shade of Resene Double Sea Fog, adding to the peaceful feeling in the space. A classic pavement white with a hint of grey, Resene Double Sea Fog’s dreamy, hazy aesthetic is a soft partner to the bold green. It’s a gentle solution when white feels just too white for your setting. If you are drawn to more lightness in your bathroom, bring in Resene Double Sea Fog further throughout the room, painting your door or washbasin benchtop in it.

If you want to create a colour journey throughout your home with green in other parts of the house, bring in other perfect partners such as Resene Green Spring, fresh and quiet-natured. Incorporate it into the setting on the door, side table or floor, evoking instant freshness with this green-toned neutral.

A touch paler, Resene Secrets adds to the layered green approach even further. Get colour confident and use an accent colour that energises in a warm, spicy way with Resene Cinnamon. Its uplifting comfort balances the energising nature of your tonal greens beautifully.

Such an enigmatic approach to colour shows a shift in colour confidence where strong colours and texture take on the limelight, exploring optimism, fun and a sense of luxury.

To strengthen the setting, the door, clothes hanger and top of the washbasin bench have been painted in the charcoal black of Resene Bokara Grey. In the same realm of nearly-there blacks, the warm dark earthy stone of Resene Element on the vase of flowers deepens the palette and layers the different strengths of charcoal. The result is a scheme that invites and restores within its nurturing protective hues.
