A sweet and playful mural in Resene colours transforms a bedroom into a magical space for a pre-teen to dream, play and express themselves.
The teenage years are a time of great change and that extends to bedroom decor too. More independent, more opinionated and wanting their own space, most teens and pre-teens are eager to re-design their bedroom as an extension of their personality, a safe-haven to be themselves in. While most will want to take the reins design-wise, with some gentle encouragement towards a sophisticated palette of Resene paints a wall mural can be a great way to add character to their space without letting things get too out of hand.
This woodland inspired mural that features elements of Resene Green Pea, Resene Whizz Bang and Resene Tulip Tree adds instant wow factor. Plus, clever use of tonal reds and greens means that the design will stand the test of time. Leaf detailing in Resene Soulful and Resene Kandinsky incorporates lush nature elements. For older kids, low maintenance snake plants in planters painted to match the scheme pull the shapes off the walls and bring them to life, just remember to give them an occasional water!
The storybook theme across the room is modern, fun and full of texture, perfect for kids who love to engage with their surroundings through sensory play. The relaxed mismatched bedding and headboard in Resene Redwood pick up on the richer colours in the mural to create a cosy place to rest or read.
For a softer look, tie your accents to the lighter tones within the design. Carry the dreamy feeling of Resene Soulful throughout the room by swapping in a soft dusty pink throw on the bed, adding a pendant lamp in Resene Sunglo and a mirror in Resene Just Dance.
We didn’t want anything to detract from the hero piece of the room, the mural, so we’ve used Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash on the floor and Resene Half Spanish White as a base on the walls. These warm, almost mushroomy neutrals keep the rest of the look pared back. Resene Double Blanc and Resene Quarter Biscotti would work well too. Nailing these design basics means accessories, bedding and artwork can be changed out to suit your child’s age, interests and personality, saving you time and money in the long run.
Keeping furniture simple and functional will help balance out the sweeter decor items. We opted for a round bedside table with a base in Resene Sauvignon to repeat the circular elements also found on the rug and mirror. A stepstool in Resene Half Pale Rose with Resene Wallpaper Collection 529005 provides a multifunctional bedside option that still is stylish.
With some considered forethought, a whimsical mural can be a great way for your child to express themselves and create a room they’ll love for years to come, even as they enter teen territory.
