Out of the woods

From the Resene colour inspiration – latest looks gallery

As your kids get older and get into their ‘tween’ and teen years, decorating their bedrooms can sometimes become more challenging.

At this age, their personalities and preferences will be more solidified, and one way that they’ll want to start communicating this strong new sense of self is through their bedroom décor.

While it can be hard for some parents to give up complete creative control of an entire room of their house, it’s really important at this age to let your child to be much more involved in the decorating process than they were when they were little. After all, they will be the ones spending the most time in their room, so you’re going to want them to like it!

One idea is to start by picking out some bed linens together. A colourful throw cushion can be the perfect place to kick off a colour scheme, or an entire room theme – plus, it’s much easier to find paint that co-ordinates with your bedding than the other way around. When your child has found their favourite, bring the cushion in to your local Resene ColorShop and the staff there can help you find some colours to match or coordinate with it. Or, try uploading an image of the cushion to the free online Resene Colour Palette Generator. This innovative tool will create a Resene colour palette based on the most common colours that occur in the image and tell you what proportion (%) of the palette they are to help give you an idea of the colour balance.

In this tween bedroom, we’ve done just that. Our bedding inspired a ‘woodland’ theme and colour palette grounded with upper walls in Resene Eighth Joss, a sweet pale taupe, lower tongue-and-groove panelling in Resene Finch, a lichen grey green, and a floor in Resene Digeridoo, a red-hearted warm brown. Having a theme allowed us to create a cohesive space, yet it was accomplished in a way that wouldn’t feel too ‘kiddy’ and would allow the room to grow up with the child.

One major way to build that sense of cohesion in a space is through having matching furnishings, and an easy way to do that is through paint. That way, even if your child’s furniture set includes some hand-me-downs or one-off purchases, they will still go together seamlessly. Each key piece of furniture in the space – the headboard, the bedside table and the storage ladder – were originally different colours. We used Resene Redwood to unify them and create a matching set. The same was done with the ‘minor’ furniture, such as the baskets and pendant lamp, which were all painted in Resene Fahrenheit. To ensure your painted furniture stands up to wear and tear, choose Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel paint.

We saved the colours we pulled from our throw cushions – Resene Black Forest, Resene Twine, Resene Woodrush, Resene Hairy Heath, Resene Toffee, Resene Cumin and Resene Doeskin – for the finishing touches by painting them on small accessories and artwork throughout the room, including vases, small storage boxes, tea light holders and the DIY animal masks hanging on the wall. That keeps those colours working their magic as accents and keeps your statement cushion from blending into the background. For best results, use each colour in at least three places within the room, which will help keep the eye moving around the space as it visually links the colours together.

Despite the fact that our bed didn’t come with a canopy, we wanted to bring the same mood to our tween’s room and allow her a sense of privacy and seclusion. We created our canopy with an 80cm long piece of thick dowelling. We drilled a pilot hole into the centre of one end and used a double-ended dowel screw to anchor it to the wall. Then, we draped a 4m long piece of calico cotton over it and artfully tacked the ends at even intervals on the other side of the wall so that it would hang nicely. If you wanted, you could even decorate your calico cotton using Resene testpots and stencils or hand painted designs.

Top tip: In the same way that we used colour to create repetition throughout this space, be on the lookout for other subtle ways to repeat shapes or motifs within your room. Our rug, for instance, repeats the same diamond pattern that appears in our headboard. Similarly, our rounded lamp and vases play off of the rounded shapes on our accent cushions.
