Going global

From the Resene colour inspiration – latest looks gallery

Stylist Amber Armitage takes a trip around the globe and translates her inspiration into spaces featuring statement prints, creative colour combos and exotic homewares.

Interiors inspired by Morocco

A visit to Marrakech is a feast for the senses, an intense fusion of colours, smells and sounds. Retreating into the beautiful roads (traditional homes with interior courtyards) and gardens was a welcome escape from crowded bazaars crammed with colourful goods. I fell in love with the contrast of plants against the chalky pink tones of the city walls.

Paint: Wall painted in Resene Dawn Chorus, floor in Resene Permanent Green.

Accessories: Moroccan Rooftops unframed A0 print, faux palm, both from Amber Armitage. Calcha embroidered cushion, Angulo cushion cover (by cactus), and large pillar candle, all from Citta. African grain basket, from Indie Home Collective. Elena Renker x Mark Antonia autumn candle, from Mark Antonia. Amber Armitage x Mood Store painted pots, from Mood Store. Terracotta pot, from Kings Plant Barn. Other items stylist’s own.

The tranquil waters and azure coastline of Italy’s Amalfi Coast are the perfect place to enjoy a simpler way of life – I found the stillness of the water mesmerising and utterly relaxing. Indoors, the interiors are clean and pared-back with minimal colour, placing the focus on the breath-taking views. We can recreate this relaxed, Mediterranean feel at home with a daybed and crisp white styling.

The big-city lights, brash attitude and anything-goes style of Las Vegas is a refreshing concept to bring into the home. It’s all about colour here, with bright, primary hues in slightly dirty shades evoking the vintage glamour of Vegas. Luxe velvet and glossy brass introduce some glamorous texture and mimic the hotels and casinos of the city.

If you have the space, create a cocktail corner with a hotel lobby vibe and experience the fun of a big night out without leaving the warmth of home. Add a neon light, break out a deck of cards and ask yourself, “Do I feel lucky?”

Interiors inspired by Abu Dhabi

The contrast between the modern and the ancient is what makes Abu Dhabi so fascinating. Situated on the edge of the Persian Gulf and close to the desert, the rolling sandscapes, crystal blue water, breath-taking palaces and ornate architectural details were a new kind of beautiful to me. The patterns and textures in the sand are simple yet complex, and the arid landscape has a rosy glow that inspires a warm, dusty colour palette.

Use sandy tones warmed up by pink and terracotta, and contrast them with the pale blues of sky and sea. Sculptural white ceramics evoke the domes of Abu Dhabi’s ancient mosques and architecture.

Interiors inspired by American Road Trip

Huge skies and long, endless roads frame the breath-taking scenery you’ll see while road-tripping around America. There’s nothing like hitting the highway in a mini RV armed with everything you need, a map and the freedom to go wherever you please. Driving from mountain to desert makes you realise how big the US is, and how small we are. The only constants are the wide blue sky and the greys and yellows of the open road – the colours of our road-trip palette.

Furnishings are inspired by the clash between man and nature, with textures such as plastic and cement paired with the colours of deep green cacti, yellow desert flowers and textured grey stone.
