Wood works

From habitat plus - decorating and colour trends 2023

Back in the day wood finishes in interiors seemed to come in one solid dark brown stain that covered the wood completely. No more.

Our use of wood inside our homes has changed radically as we look for more ways to keep the inside of our homes connected with nature and the outdoors. It’s a very simple way to keep the texture and interest of wood, while playing with different colour palettes.

A lounge with a modern Scandi feel

The pale finish on the wooden surfaces and walls gives this room a fresh modern Scandi feel.

Upper wall painted in Resene Bone, tongue-and-groove panelling in Resene Colorwood Becalm and floor, skirting board and dado rail in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy. Sideboard stained in Resene Colorwood Bask, lamp base and low dish in Resene Colorwood Shade, plant pot in Resene Colorwood Shore Thing, floor vase in Resene Colorwood Rising Tide, stool and short vase in Resene Paddock, painted book in Resene Brown Sugar and DIY artwork in Resene Rolling Stone, Resene Paddock and Resene Mine Shaft.

The perfect beachy backdrop

Create the perfect beachy backdrop by mixing wood stains and washes with other earthy shades.

Background in Resene Colorwood Becalm and plate in Resene Colorwood Shade. Vases in (from top to bottom) Resene Mine Shaft, Resene Rolling Stone and Resene Paddock, faux coral in Resene Bone and driftwood in (clockwise from left) Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy, Resene Colorwood Becalm, Resene Bask, Resene Colorwood Shore Thing, Resene Colorwood Rising Tide and Resene Colorwood Shade.

You can finish your wood in a completely different hue like Resene Colorwood Shade or Resene Colorwood Shore Thing from the We Speak Beach range for a colour wash that still showcases the wood grain and character. Or choose a soft wash finish in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy or Resene Colorwood Becalm for a textured neutral backdrop.

And remember, wood is for more than floors. Add battens and board to walls and ceilings for three-dimensional design drama.

A subtle elegant bedroom - wooden surfaces

Celebrate the grain and texture of wooden surfaces to bring subtle, natural elegance to any room.

Right wall, floor and vase in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy and left wall in Resene Half Biscotti. Headboard, sideboard, stool and candleholder in Resene Colorwood Bask, plant pot in Resene Colorwood Becalm and painted books in Resene Wafer, Resene Gold Coast and Resene Half Biscotti. Bedlinen from Foxtrot Home, linen cushions and throw from Adairs.

A lounge with green battens

There’s no need to restrict yourself to a palette of browns to showcase wood finishes.

Walls in Resene Concrete complemented by wood battens finished in Resene Colorwood Shore Thing allow the timber grain to show through. Stool and candleholder in Resene Colorwood Bask, sideboard and coffee table in Resene Triple Concrete, vases in Resene Shore Thing and Resene Rising Tide and tealight holder in Resene Nocturnal. Sofa from Freedom, cushions from Adairs.

Did you know?  The Resene Colorwood We Speak Beach range is a colour wash as opposed to a wood stain. Both enhance the timber colour and allow the timber grain to show through. Colour washes, like Resene Colorwood Whitewash, sit on top of the surface of the timber and can be applied over already varnished surfaces, whereas Resene Colorwood stains penetrate into the timber grain and need existing varnishes removed before application.
