Outstanding outdoors

From habitat plus - decorating and colour trends 2023

Some of the most popular interior colour and design styles are also finding their way to our home exteriors, as we aim for seamless transitions between inside and out.

These include the use of warmer neutrals like Resene Triple White Pointer, or Resene Carrara, with the warmth of Resene Uluru wood stain.

A textured wall on the patio using two Resene colours

The warm, textured tones of the wall and floor of this patio area create a sheltered inviting outdoor area.

Wall painted in Resene Triple White Pointer with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Carrara to create a textured finish. Table in Resene Duck Egg Blue with tray in Resene Emerge and vase in Resene Rising Tide. Sofa, cushions and rug from Outside Space, carafe from H&M Home.

Using darker shades in outdoor areas

Darker shades can work particularly well outdoors. They recede against lighter colours or when used behind plants to create a space that seems larger but still feels sheltered.

Cladding and tall plant pot painted in Resene Nocturnal and decking in Resene Woodsman Uluru. Coffee table and bowl in Resene Mercury, light fixture in Resene FX Faux Rust Effect and ball sculpture in Resene Alabaster and Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. Plant pot in Resene Pale Slate. Chairs from Danske Møbler, outdoor radio and cushion from Good Thing.

top tip  Exposure to UV light causes timber to lose its colour and grey, so always protect any outdoor timber cladding on your home with an exterior wood stain or paint. Resene CoolColour paints and stains reflect more heat to keep surfaces cooler than the normal colour.

On the flipside many of us are appreciating the power of colour on our exteriors to give our homes the uplifting individual touches we love inside. When choosing bolder exterior colours think about the landscape your home sits in or the colours in your garden to find inspiration – whether it’s beachy blues like Resene Duck Egg Blue or vibrant sunset shades like corals or leafy greens.

Textured or washed-looking finishes like Resene Sandtex in Resene Foggy Grey are also increasingly popular as a simple, effective way to add interest and flair to outdoor spaces. Bold colours on wood finishes in shades like Resene Woodsman Iroko stain or Resene Nocturnal provide drama and impact and put a modern spin on traditional wood finishes.

For those that prefer more neutral shades but still want to add a splash of something bolder, painted front doors are still a hugely popular trend. Deep reds, bold golds, burnt oranges and grass greens are all finding their way on to exterior doors.

An outdoor area with a textured wall - Mediterranean patio

The right mix of colours and techniques outdoors can transport you anywhere. This textured wall painted in Resene Half Canterbury Clay with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay and Resene Double Spanish White invokes the warmth of a Mediterranean patio.

Designed by Barry Connor.

top tip  Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is a great option for painting stairs and outdoor areas that are prone to being slippery when wet.

Harmonious indoor and outdoor transition

Subtly contrasting colours work well to create a defined yet harmonious transition between inside and out.
