Project ideas and inspiration from Good magazine
Cut visual clutter and give tired shelves new life with doors and colourful paint.
Step one: Have a builder construct a frame around your cabinet and hang doors using spring-loaded hinges. We used Carter Holt Harvey’s Ecoply (Bestwood, Classic) panels to make the doors. This plywood is tough, durable and easy to clean. It’s made from sustainable plantation pine and has low formaldehyde emissions, making it ideal for use in bedrooms.
Step two: Fill any nail holes with polyfiller and sand surfaces smooth. Before painting a precoated MDF surface, apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Allow two hours for the coat to dry.

Step three: Paint any raw wood surfaces with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Allow two hours for paint to dry. Cover with two topcoats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel, using either a paintbrush or roller to apply the paint. We chose Resene Rice Cake from the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection for both the cabinet and walls, to help the cabinet disappear.
To get the look: Inject drama into your bedroom with a stunning feature wall painted in a warm and bold tone. We chose the colour Resene Camarone, in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.
