Bedside unit

Transform an old set of drawers into a colourful bedside unit with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 43

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: Artists’ brush, clean cloth, old set of drawers (ours was varnished with a bare particle board top), paintbrush, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Double Resolution Blue and Resene Point Break, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpot of Resene Hi Jinx, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Rich Cream.

Other ideas: Create a rich green look using Resene Kaitoke Green and Resene Amulet with a contrasting strip of Resene Bright Red.

Step one
Remove the drawers from the unit.

Step two
Lightly sand the old varnish with sandpaper to ‘key’ the surface and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to any varnished areas and allow to dry.

Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the particleboard top and allow to dry.

Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Double Resolution Blue to the top, sides, edges and legs of the unit, allowing each coat to dry.

Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Hi Jinx to the recessed drawer handles, allowing each coat to dry.

Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Point Break to the drawer fronts, allowing each coat to dry.

Step eight
Replace the drawers back into the unit.
