Three tone chair

Use three subtle Resene cream colours to upcycle an old chair.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 36

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloths, Filler, Methylated spirits, Paintbrushes, Previously painted wooden chair, Putty knife or similar Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Double Dutch White, Resene Marzipan and Resene Quarter Dutch White, Resene Quick Dry, Sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Chardonnay.

Other ideas: For a subtle monochrome look, paint the chair with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene Black White and Resene Surrender.

Step 1
Step one
Dab some methylated spirits on a clean cloth and rub onto the previously painted surface to determine if the paint is oil or water-based. If the paint softens and comes off on the cloth then it’s waterbased. The old paint on our chair is oil-based.
Step 2
Step two
Fill any holes or imperfections with filler and allow to dry.
Step 3
Step three
Sand the entire chair to smooth any filled areas and also to provide a ‘key’ to the previously painted surface.
Step 4
Step four
Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step 5
Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the chair and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Paint the legs and back supports of the chair with two coats of Resene Quarter Dutch White, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Paint the seat and back of the chair with two coats of Resene Marzipan, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the front, back and side areas (under the seat) with two coats of Resene Double Dutch White, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
