Hot coffee table

Transform a tired old coffee table into a fabulous feature with this hot three colour combo from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 01

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: an old coffee table, damp sponge, clean cloth, low-tack masking tape, paintbrushes, sandpaper and tape measure. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss enamel tinted to Resene Daredevil, Resene Desperado and Resene Flashback.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Texas Rose and the woodwork with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: For a retro purple look, try a combination of Resene Blackcurrant, Resene Blue Diamond and Resene Lilac Bush.

Step 1

Clean the coffee table with a damp sponge and lightly sand the old varnish to provide a ‘key’. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the coffee table and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 3

Paint the underside and legs of the coffee table with two coats of Resene Desperado allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Paint the table top with one coat of Resene Daredevil and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 5
Step five
Apply a second coat of Resene Daredevil and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 6

Measure and mask off a 50mm strip around the edge of the table top and then mask off eight equal rectangles, leaving a 50mm gap between each.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Flashback to each rectangle and allow to dry for two hours. Apply a second coat of Resene Flashback to each rectangle.
Step 8
Step eight
Carefully remove the masking tape and allow the paint to dry for two hours.
