4 tips DIY home decorators wish they’d gotten before remodelling

From the Resene decorating blog

When taking interior designing into your own hands, then you need to check out these four tips before you get started to achieve maximum energy.

An elegant bathroom design

There are few things in life that are as rewarding as a job well done. Therefore taking home decorating into your own hands and watching your space transform by your own ability is an incredibly exhilarating experience. That feeling of accomplishment is arguably better than hiring a professional. That is, however, unless you botch the job.

When redesigning, all homeowners must consider the flow of the room, aka its feng shui. Feng shui is a relatively old concept, but it is still widely practised for those who need a clear mind, as well as a clean home. Everyday Health explains that this ancient Chinese art is meant to design your space so it reflects your life – or the life you'd like to have – in order to achieve a mental balance. By arranging your home in a certain way, you're trying to move the chi – aka the energy that all objects have – in a positive arrangement.

This brings us back to your DIY remodelling. If you get started decorating before considering all elements of design, you could disturb the balance!

When taking interior designing into your own hands, then you need to check out these four tips before you get started to achieve maximum energy.

1. Clean out the clutter

Before you start painting or moving, and especially before you bring anything new in, be sure to get rid of all the clutter in your home. Empty junk drawers, clear out the attic and remove anything that doesn't have a real purpose. Once the space is cleared of everything you don't need, you should be able to better visualise what to do with the space, not to mention it'll be easier to redecorate without excess rubbish to move around.

Your colour scheme should match the energy of the room.

2. Not all paints are created equal

Colour has a big impact on your mood, and is another important element of feng shui. The process of selecting a paint colour varies from home to home. Depending on light sources, the same tone can look different in your place. You should consider your furnishings and the purpose of the room when perusing swatches so the balance matches once all is said and painted. A zesty Resene Cabaret may fit the character of a lively dining room, but it won't work in a nursery where a softer blush colour like Resene Cosmos would be more appropriate. You have to read the energy of the room and match it to the paint. As a good rule of thumb, the more vibrant the shade, the more energy it will give off.

3. Resize a room with furniture

Now you're ready to move on to the furniture and general decor. If you have limited space, you've probably noticed that things can get a little cramped rather quickly. Well, getting rid of the clutter was step one in minimising this feeling, but step two is all about your furnishings. You can make a room appear bigger by adding in furniture that's lower to the ground. Guests can't tell the difference and the ceiling instantly feels higher. Also make sure to give these pieces plenty of space, otherwise it will feel cramped. Long, vertical mirrors can also make a room feel taller, whereas a horizontal one will give some length.

Long accessories and low furniture makes this room feel bigger.

4. Fit your decor to the space

The final tip is simple, but often overlooked. Ensure that statement pieces don't have too much, or too little, of a voice. Measure your wall space as well as the decor you plan to fill it with, otherwise you risk over or under whelming a space.

And there you have it. Now you're ready to get started remodelling your home in a way that will make you feel happy on the inside and out.
