Warm abstract painting

It’s easy to create this simple abstract painting using a selection of warm Resene colours.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 92

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: Artists’ canvas, old towel, paintbrush, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpot roller and tray, Resene testpots of Resene Japonica, Resene Kamikaze, Resene Sebedee, Resene Tuft Bush and Resene Wax Flower, Small blocks of wood (x4).

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Paua.

Other ideas: For a cool blue abstract use a combination of Resene Decadence, Resene Delta Blue, Resene Float, Resene Half Resolution Blue and Resene Time Out.

Step 1
Step one
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the artists’ canvas and allow to dry.
Step 2
Step two
Place a wooden block under each corner of the canvas to raise it off the work surface.
Step 3

Apply one generous coat of Resene Kamikaze to the edge of the canvas using the testpot roller.
Step 4
Step four
Apply a band of Resene Kamikaze around the edge of the canvas, as shown, rolling the paint quite generously. Quickly wash the tray and roller then wipe dry with the towel.
Step 5

In the same way, apply a rectangle of Resene Sebedee, allowing it to overlap the adjacent colour and mix a little. Again, quickly wash the tray and roller then wipe dry with the towel.
Step 6
Step six
Apply a similar rectangle of Resene Japonica, again allowing it to overlap the adjacent colour and mix a little. Once more, clean the tray and roller and then wipe dry with the towel.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply a rectangle of Resene Wax Flower, once more allowing it to overlap the adjacent colour and mix a little. Again, quickly wash the tray and roller then wipe dry with the towel.
Step 8
Step eight
Finally apply a small central rectangle of Resene Tuft Bush, allowing it to overlap the adjacent colour and mix a little. Allow paint to dry thoroughly before hanging. Wash the tray and roller then wipe dry with the towel.
