Potpourri bowl

Create this natural air freshener from a simple terracotta bowl and a couple of Resene testpots.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 53

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Bowl-shaped terracotta pot, dried aromatic flowers or potpourri mix (we used lavender heads), paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), PVA glue, Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear), Resene Terracotta Sealer, Resene testpots of Resene Subzero and Resene Tory Blue, self-hardening clay (we used ‘Das’).

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Sail.

Other ideas: Create a rich pink bowl using a combination of Resene Cabaret and Resene Geronimo.

Step 1
Step one
Break off a small piece of self-hardening clay and knead it into a ball.
Step 2
Step two
Spread a little PVA glue around the hole in the bottom of the terracotta pot and press the ball of clay into the hole, as shown. Leave overnight for the glue and clay to dry.
Step 3
Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Terracotta Sealer to the pot and allow to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Subzero to the outside of the pot and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Apply a second coat of Resene Subzero to the outside of the pot. Before the paint has a chance to dry, mix in dabs of Resene Tory Blue to create a mottled effect, as shown. Leave to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Tory Blue to the outer rim and inside of the pot, as shown, and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply a second coat of Resene Tory Blue to the outer rim and inside of the pot. Before the paint has a chance to dry, mix in a few dabs of Resene Subzero to create a mottled effect, as shown. Leave to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) to the pot, allowing two hours for each coat to dry, and then fill with dried aromatic flowers or potpourri mix.
