Splatter plate

Create this stylish ceramic glazed-effect wall plate using some artistic flair and a few Resene testpots.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 47

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Large china or glass plate, paintbrush, Resene Hot Weather Additive, Resene Multishield+ gloss (now Resene Concrete Clear), Resene testpots of Resene Jaguar and Resene Surrender, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, sandpaper, self-adhesive plate hanger, small wooden stirrer.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Bismark.

Other ideas: Reverse the effect and dribble thinned Resene Alabaster over a basecoat of Resene Nero.

Step 1

Clean and dry the plate thoroughly and then lightly sand to provide a ‘key’.
Step 2

Wet the back of the plate hanger and leave for five to ten minutes until the glue becomes tacky.
Step 3

Press the plate hanger onto the back of the plate, as shown, and leave to dry overnight.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the front of the plate and back rim, allowing two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Surrender to the front of the plate and back rim, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Mix a little Resene Hot Weather Additive into the testpot of Resene Jaguar and stir well.
Step 7
Step seven
Flick and dribble the thinned paint onto the plate and leave to dry thoroughly.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss to the front of the plate and back rim, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
